I agree with the fast breakfast comments. Though it may be the last place I'd go for dinner, I often (while on the road) stop for breakfast. And, no, their coffee isn't better than Starbucks, but it's not as bad as it used to be (arguably best road coffee might just be Speedway). Coffee I made in a helmet with water from a mud puddle is better than Starbucks. Starbucks had terrible coffee when there was just one Starbucks at Pike Street and it's gotten worse. BTW people that put stuff* in coffee aren't allowed to vote on coffee. *cream, milk, sugar, chocolate, blueberrys, etc.

I think their greatest marketing mistake was making "healthier" and "trendier" the priority over flavor. Pleasing the public is a funny thing. They talk about eating healthy, and sometimes they do, but they still go for the burgers, fried chicken, pizza, tacos, and pancakes. Tacos not healthy, dems fightin words amigo.

Whiskey shouldn't be mixed with anything either. So drink your whiskey straight, your coffee straight, side by side if you care too but not mixed.

We still frequent ours here in town for a fast breakfast sandwich. Sausage, egg, & Cheese mcmuffin will stick to your ribs for half the day. And your colon even longer.

Coffee is a excellent place to hide whiskey and is the *exception to the rule of water never coming into contact with good whiskey. * unless you are talking about cask strength whisky, then water is allowed.

It's Michigan. The guy who lived behind me shot my above ground pool and there wasn't even bacon involved. What would you expect in Michigan?

Doug, Why are you always wrong? Love, John I was there when there was only one Starbucks, and I've drunk my coffee made in a helmet. Were you, have you? The Starchucks fad is just that a fad created by advertising.

The only problem I have with Starbucks is the price -- not the coffee. If I were to guess, I'd say maybe you had a magic helmet. You should never have gotten rid of it. You could have marketed Helmet Coffee and become rich. Then you could have been a rich anarchist. A rich anarchist who doesn't know crap about coffee. A rich anarchist who doesn't know crap about coffee, but owns a magic helmet.
Sorry you got rid of the helmet now, aren't you?

I'm with Doug on McDonald's coffee. And so is Consumer's Reports. CR ranked McDonald's coffee well above Starbucks in a taste testing smack down. Googling a sampling of coffee reviews, McDonalds coffee appears to be generally well regarded and it is probably the best "on the road" coffee joint you are likely to encounter. McDonald's probably has the quickest (and freshest) roasted bean delivery system of all its competitors.. And it is store policy to toss and brew fresh every 30 minutes (something even toniest of brew joints might ignore...I know the local Caribou does). McDonald's coffee is a medium roast with a nice nutty flavor. I compare McDonald's coffee to mine on most early morning trips during One Act season, and I usually prefer McDonald's. And I'm using fresh ground Walmart or Target beans (both rank well ahead of Starbucks and most others), and I'm using a top-rated Braun coffee maker. But, I can't match that nutty flavor of Micky D's. I suppose I should stop buying French and Italian roasts (but I love munching on dark roasted beans). www.seattletimes.com/business/mcdonalds-coffee-beats-starbucks-says-consumer-reports/www.foodfacts.info/blog/2007/02/mcdonalds-coffee-ranks-high.htmlhubpages.com/hub/Why-is-McDonalds-Coffee-so-GoodI also am a big fan of Egg McMuffins in the morning. And, just lately, I have become hooked on McDonald's fish fillet. I started on them around Lent (it is the one part of Lent I am really in step with, fishwiches). The breaded fish fillet is piping hot and slathered with a dill-infested tarter sauce. A thin leaf of lettuce rest on top, and the two are bracketed with a 100% whipped, processed, and texturally denuded white flour bun that, when smooshed into a ball, will hold its shape for up to six hours. And stick to a wall, if so desired. (Sweetheart would be so proud). Yumm! It is so very, very good.

I don't think a pricier menu will do them any good. Sometimes I wonder if places like the original McDonalds would work now, hamburger or cheesburger, no options, fries and a shake, nothing else, quick and relatively cheap, no indoor seating. IMHO, we may be back to those early '60s economic choices soon. That's exacly what Maidrites do in Iowa, and it works. They don't even have a menu, and will stare at you if you want one. You sit and the counter and say how many you want, if you want them with cheese, and if you are so inclined, that you want them wet. No fries, just chips, and then a soda. They do make a variety of malts. But that's it. But walk into, say, Taylor's Maidrite in Marshalltown, and they're busy all day, every day, no matter the hour.

And it is store policy to toss and brew fresh every 30 minutes (something even toniest of brew joints might ignore...I know the local Caribou does). According to my daughter, who worked at a couple of different McDonald's in high school and college, individual managers have the authority to override the corporate time limit on when to toss and when to make more. Let's just say, tossing doesn't win out very often.

Consumer Reports did sample 42,000 different McDonalds in its coffee survey, but, it's entirely possible that there are a few rouge managers on the loose ignoring the socialist, best for all, Corporate Policy and succumbing to an individualistic capitalist greed and serving sour coffee while in search of that extra dime...
but, most McDonalds have another factor working in their freshness favor... they are so damn busy a coffee pot doesn't have a chance of lasting ten minutes, let alone half an hour. In the morning, the coffee never stops brewing. Most McDonalds are a sight to behold between 7:00-10:00. There is a constant stream of cars lined up and moving steadily past the window. My McDonalds is amazing, there are days I barely come to a stop at the pickup window. If you don't have power windows, you can slow up the entire breakfast train.
Meanwhile, the Burger King next door has an empty lot and no cars in line. The busier the place, the fresher the coffee. Maxwell's Maxim. And no coffee joint on earth is busier than McDonalds in the morning time.

I think McD's coffee sucks. I think the Pikes Place blend from the Bucks company is pretty good. CR has had more than a few flubs in their reviews over the years. They surveyed 42K McDs? Somebodies trippin'.
Patrick has it right. The problem with McD is their food is crappy.
