And it's only occasional, but I get a pound or two from a friend who grows his own (and then some) above captain cook.

That's 'cause the egg mcmuffin isn't what one should order. It's the sausage biscuit with egg that's the thing.

Starbucks coffee always tastes just a little burned to me. I have found a couple types I like pretty well, though. Morning Joe and another one with a mountain in the name come to mind. We don't eat fast food, though, so what McDonald's or Col. Chickenpuffs has listed on the big board behind the teenagers' heads is something I have no knowledge of. I have a dim memory of having a sausage biscuit from somewhere many years ago but I could not tell you what it was like. Maybe I dreamed it. I would rather go in a small family restaurant for breakfast while on the road than stop at the Golden Starches. We did that on the way back from FL, near the AL line. There was a McDougal's, a Burger King, and something else next to a place called the Southern Panhandle. We picked the Southern Panhandle. The restaurant had actual made from scratch biscuits, grits, eggs made to order, fresh squeezed OJ, great and unlimited coffee, and all the other things we like at breakfast along with waitresses that called me sugar and Barb dearie, and said things like, "Y'all come back, you heah?" Regulars Virgil and Wilber greeted us and asked us about our trip and told us which waitresses were their favorites. You don't get that at fast food places. You get bad food in a greasy bag.

There is a waffle house on every corner in the Panhandle. Some are nicer than others but I usually pick a place more in line with the Southern Panhandle than one of the chain places. More of an adventure, I suppose, and often a really good place to eat. No one in a Waffle House ever called me sugar except one guy who was a bit tipsy, so I don't think he really meant it. I may have to head over to Raspberry Pancake House this morning after all this talk.

Speaking as a New Englander, Dunkin Donuts has the best coffee. I never cared for Starbucks. Now, in honesty, I use sugar in coffee. Yes, in the Navy we drank it black and if it was my turn to make the coffee I made it strong so it would last longer but once I was out and could have it my way, I add sugar. If you're ever in New England, remember that "Regular Coffee" has cream and sugar in it.

I second the thumbs up on McD's coffee and breakfast sandwiches. However, many McD's will not put milk in your coffee unless you buy a carton of milk. Creamer gives me wicked heart burn. So there's that. ***By the way, it's not nice to confuse Doug by agreeing with him, or giving him supportive facts. He needs to be able to grumble.

Ain't got one up here, but they are the BEST! Another great reason to go to Asheville. And I don't even need one.

Some places in the South put chicory in the coffee. One guy told me it harkens back to war time rationing and it is still done because people like it. If you order iced tea in the South, it comes sweetened unless you ask. I don't use sugar so the first time I ordered ice tea and took a big gulp, I almost gagged.

That's exacly what Maidrites do in Iowa, …You sit and the counter and say how many you want, … Actually, Maid-Rite offers a very tasty fish sandwich too. At least the ones I've been in.

Waffle House has OK coffee these days, they changed brands about 10 yrs ago before that bad stuff. You can get called Honey or Sugar in a lot of Waffle House.
Most places in the West have OK coffee. Good tea stops west of TX and north of TN. And the tip about "regular coffee" in New England is right. Ugly stuff. Dunkin Donuts coffee is good. I only buy coffee at McD and only cause we use their restrooms, never their food. Given a choice on the road we will eat at a "mom and pop" some are good and some not, if we can't find one we go with a sit down waitress type place chain.

Do you guys who live east of interstate 5 have any Original Pancake House restaurants? They only serve breakfasts, there is always a 40 minute wait for a table, they are expensive, but man, the food is great. Best bacon I've ever had at a restaurant. Pancakes are divine. www.originalpancakehouse.comMike

Mr. ePaul Tandberg described a thin leaf of lettuce on his Filet O' Fish -- we call that a slice of American cheese. Only thing green on those sammiches are the bits of pickle in the tartar sauce. I think there were clouds in Paul's coffee.

I think there were clouds in Paul's coffee. I have never had one of these. It is basically a fish stick sandwich, isn't it? I have seen people eat them and wondered why they were doing so.
