Well, I took it to the collision place. I wired the plastic back to the body with some coat hangers. That worked well. It drives fine with no rubbing anywhere. Looks like a Frankenstein car. But that's temporary. They gave me an estimate of the cost from what they could see of $2,100. But that doesn't include frame damage that might be there. And there IS frame damage. Things aren't aligned like they should be. But they'll work it out with State Farm and it'll cost me just the $250 deductible, no matter what (so they say). I'm guessing $3,500 when it's done.
**sigh**
But it'll be almost a new car in the body. The engine has 156k on it, though. I'll surely trade is in later this year. But for $250, I'll get much more out of it than that, so I got to do it.
I'll also need a rental for the duration of the repair. But that's just the way the Corolla crumbles.

A bright red one.

My psychic powers are seeing a different car in your near future. I did not say new. I said different.

I'm out of town at a conference with my rent-a-chevy. I got a voice message from the body shop saying the damage is $4,600. They will take it up with State Farm and get back to me. Do you get to keep the trailer hitch?

If it can be aligned, then I wouldn't care about the expensive plastic cosmetic crap. I'd just keep on driving it. Then again, I have no pride.

Just got back home. Haven't heard anything since the phone message. I'll contact the shop in the morning and try to figure out what's really up.

State Farm say's they'll total it and give me a check for $5335. It I try to have it fixed and operate it they'll give me a check for $3881 (minus salvage value and a couple of things).
**sigh**
I might have to do some quick shopping.

$4K would make a nice down payment on a Mini Countryman, or other small wagon, and you would have $1,300 to diddle with.

Crazy dudes.
I went to the Honda, Toyota, and Ford dealers today. So far the Civic looked and felt head and shoulders better than the Corolla and the Focus. I'll swing by the Hyundai dealer tomorrow and give an Elentra a try. I'll pick my fav model, then I'll decide if I'm going used or new. The 2 & 3 year old vehicles are going for 75% or so of the 2015 sticker prices. Might just pop for new.

Marshall --PLEASE give Mazda a try -- the new 2 looks great although it is just now being shipped to dealers and might not be able to be bought cheaply, but Civics have never been cheap, either (good resale, though). Drive a Mazda 3 -- they are light and nimble and fun. You know, zoom, zoom.

OK. There's a Mazda Dealer down the block from all the other guys. I'll look into it.
But it's going to be hard to move me off the Civic. It was a real car compared to everything else I've driven. My rental car now is a Chevy Impala. Soft, loose, spongy ride GM is known for. Yuck.

I'm probably only interested in the 3. The length and wheelbase match up with the Corolla and Civic. I drove a Honda Fit and found it to be too tin-can like. Sue frowned. Said she felt every bump in the road.
I see the 3 has a 2.0 liter as opposed to 1.8 for Corolla and Civic. The Zoom factor, I imagine. But I've been driving a 1.8 for 11 years and have not lusted for the extra power. And I enjoy the efficient gas mileage.

The 3 delivers good mileage, I think. Anyhoo, chekkit out. Now I gotta scoot, time to fire up the 3.5.
