AlanC or chilibill, lemmee ax you a question. What's the mos' best way to get from Natchez to Jackson, time-wise? Seems like 4 options: 1. Due east to Brookhaven, then nawth (shuddah) on I-55 2. Due nawth to Vicksburg 'n east on 20. 3. Natchez Trace all the way 4. 61 n then pick up the 'Trace where it crosses.
Options 3 & 4 look to be a fair bit shorter in miles, but I know the limits on the 'Trace are way slow (how slow, can't remember). I can't dawdle because we'll need to get past Chattannooga by nightfall.
The story is we're going to a big wedding (daughter is a bridesmaid) in Natchez at Dunleith. We're spending Fri n Sat. nights at Dunleith (can you say mint juleps on the verandah?) then need to get Christine & her friend to Summit Academy out past Chat. on Sunday.

Door number one....an no Officer Opie behind it. I think that is 84 or 98 East to I-55. I think it is 4 lane with a 65 mph speed limit. The Trace only if you do not go insane after 3 hours of 50mph. The wife and I just spent a weekend in Natchez a month or so ago. It was good; we need to go back. Lots to see.

The last time I was down that way I came back to I-55. The Trace is OK for short distances but the 50 mph speed limit, in spite of the nice scenery, becomes incredibly boring after a few short minutes. Follow the mule trails!

It's also a good idea to stay off the Trace at night. No Parkway patrol and very very few State Troopers. Can be kinda dangerous at worse or unsafe at best.

Not related to the directions, only to the location. At the New Orleans airport, I heard a couple baggage handlers refer to cardboard boxes as "Mississippi Samsonite".

So much for listening to my friends. We took the Trace and enjoyed every minute of it. Didn't even seem like slow travel. It was nice to travel 2 hours without one billboard, house, commercial vehicle, mailbox....nuthin. Only the slightest glimpses of modern life. Beautiful. Thanks for suggesting it, guys.
Oh, and just for those of you who don't already know, Mississippi is drop dead gorgeous. And much of it seems to have at least one foot planted in a slower & gentler past.
