Well, that sucks.
I bought my first BB King album as part of my "12 for a nickle" starter order from Columbia House, probably around 1979 or so. "Take it Home". This was my favorite track:

That's too bad. That's one of the hard parts of growing old, our idols die, our friends die.
He will be missed.

89. Funny, but that is still too young, isn't it? RIP.

That clip is good. It shows what I love and don't like about BB. The boy could wail with the best of them. Never much liked his simple clean stark humbucker guitar work. Little emotion in the guitar. In fact in this track it gets in the way of that lovely rich voice.

To take a contrarian view.... I think the solo on that track is just classic BB King. I adore the way at the end, he pauses for a moment, than hits the root note one more time. You can almost hear him say "goddam right, bitches. One. Note."

Yeah. The lead is fine. But the noodling he plays through the vocal line is distracting. It doesn't add. It subtracts from the power of the voice.

…Never much liked his simple clean stark humbucker guitar work. Little emotion in the guitar. Marshall, you need an ear replacement… or maybe a new emotion detector. (IMHO)

One of the absolute greats, sad news.
As for the song above... By his own admission, BB never sang and played at the same time, I don't recall ever seeing him comp chords under the vocal, let alone lead lines, so it seems to me that the guitar part that offends Marshall was overdubbed either before or after the vocal.
As to BB's place in the music world... years ago I was playing at the Electric Theater in Chicago, a brash young rocker trying to take the world by storm with volume and posture. An old man came up to me on break and said, "You play OK, but BB King could cut you down with one note... One note, man." So true then, so true now. He was the epitome of taste, simplicity, restraint and elegance. One note, man... long live the King.

If you don't hear emotion in B.B's playing, you may want to schedule a checkup.

i can remember when the Penny dropped on me regarding his playing. Was watching him on tv, and heard and saw what kind of thought and feeling went into each note. It was like a slap in the face. That's what you're supposed to do when you play. What you play, the number of notes and complexity, is pretty much all window dressing compared to that. RIP.

I have a CD on which B.B. King and Larry Carlton (another guy who knows about economy of notes) swap phrases on a blues piece. The playing is riveting, and you can just hear the respect and admiration that Carlton had for King.
I'm not a big blues guy, but B.B. was a legend in his own time, and deservedly so.
