Palmer may be laying low, but that reckless article makes it sound like he is on the lam (can't be lured out of hiding? Cute, but slimy. If and when he is found? National Enquirer sleaze.) You don't have to answer the phone just because someone from Fish and Wildlife calls. If they have a legal reason to require you to speak with them, there is a legal process they can go through. (and one agent shooting off his mouth to a reporter is not part of the legal process). If there isn't a legal reason to respond, you can tell any caller to go to hell. You don't need to open your door or answer your phone. Due process applies even to dentists, even if biased and reckless reporting suggests it doesn't and that he is hiding out from the law (for as of yet, no law has been invoked). It sucks when a good social media lynching runs head on into the Constitution.

This just in ....
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has opened an investigation into the incident and sought contact with Palmer, said Friday morning that a representative for Palmer contacted their office late Thursday.
“The Service’s investigation is ongoing and appreciates that Dr. Palmer’s representative voluntarily reached out to the Service,” a spokeswoman in Washington, D.C., said in a statement sent to the Star Tribune.
Palmer’s whereabouts are still unclear. Protests have subsided at his dental practice since Wednesday, but reporters and curious onlookers did gather outside on Thursday at his Florida vacation home, a $1 million property on Marco Island.
Palmer declined to comment when reached by the Star Tribune on Wednesday and did not answer his phone when called Thursday and again on Friday morning. Earlier in the week, he issued a statement saying that he felt deep regret over the incident, which occurred in early July. He said that he had no idea at the time that he was shooting a prized lion and that he believed his guides were acting legally.
Fish and Wildlife Service officials said that, even though the African lion is not protected under U.S. law, they share Zimbabwe’s interest in protecting threatened animals. “The investigation will take us wherever the facts lead,” said Edward Grace, the agency’s deputy chief of law enforcement.
Palmer’s guide, Theo Bronkhorst, already has been charged in the killing, and the owner of the farm where the hunt took place, Honest Trymore Ndlovu, is expected to be charged next week.

Sorry, I think "can't be lured out of hiding" is a clever turn of phrase, given that that's exactly the way deadeye dickhead and his crew took killed the lion. With all the media attention, of course he's hiding. I posted before I read Bill's latest.
Maybe Palmer's people should have talked to the lion's people. Given his history of poaching, maybe Palmer (or his people) should have glanced at the paperwork and permits before embarking on an illegal $50,000 safari.
I've heard and read lots and lots of stuff from both sides of the argument. After careful consideration of all points of view, I really think they should take this guy out in the wild, unarmed, covered in the scent of a dead animal, and let him explain himself to the rest of the lions.

All things in moderation. Social embarrassment, some loss of business, and a fat fine if called for is appropriate.
But yes, it is starting look a bit like a pitch forked and foaming lynch mob fueled by media crack (and not just "social media"). So far, no problem, but if our government even considers (seriously, not "political" lip service bs) extraditing this guy to Zimbabwe, then I will become a full-fledged Dougian and send off $20 bucks to the "start a new revolution" fund.
This guy is going to regret taking that shot for the rest of his life. And if Fish and Wildlife gets involved, (the biggest dicks in our bureaucratic universe without question), he will wish to his last breath he had never shot that first rabbit or seen a bow and arrow. Justice will be served, it shouldn't be perverted.

So, does the fact that in response to an informal request, Palmer made voluntary contact with Fish and Wildlife on Thursday and the fact that article you think so clever in its damning turn of phrase was published on Friday mean anything to any of you?
Does jumping the gun, twisting the tale, false implications, and sloppy, jack-asssed reporting mean anything to any of you?
When big mouth at one end of Fish and Wildlife was shooting off his mouth to a reporter, Palmer was responding voluntarily to Fish and Wildlife at the other end of the building (unless the reporter was playing unethically with the timeline.)

This shitstorm has only been going on for three days. Palmer's hiding out from Fish and Wildlife was all of one day. And clever reporters describe him as hiding out, on the lam, if and when he will be found, and can't be lured out of hiding by the law.
Oh, so clever and so responsible to their profession. A world of idiots.
[not the Tribune, they responsibly update their stories and work for accuracy, and respect language, law, and rights.]

All that aside, the owner of the farm has one of the best names ever. Honest Trymore Ndlovu. "And love you," ha!

I apologize for believing the story about Palmer hiding out.
I have friends and relatives who are hunters. I admire and respect them. My bottom line is this: if you're not going to eat it, and if it is not threatening you, then don't f***ing shoot it. If your machismo needs that much bolstering, fight it with your bare hands.

No matter what, "can't be lured out of hiding" is a still a clever turn of phrase. Good writin' matters.

Some numbnuts from Nebraska who shall remain nameless pointed out on my Facebook page that the Detroit Lions get killed every year and nobody gets bent out of shape about that.
The nerve.

I saw this picture of a Dallas oilman and trophy hunter in his trophy room in National Geographic. My big question is whether the woman is his current trophy wife or a previous one. It's not exactly this:

A little interlude in this conversation. How many elephant tusks can you find in this photo?
