Good Morning Good People
Sunny (for now), predicted temps mid-30s. Hanging out with Mizz Lola, likely a mission to a big box home improvement store where we ride around on lumber carts, explore the garden sheds, and generally cause mayhem. Starting to tear out crappy old paneling for The Great Basement Project.
Have a sensational Saturday one and all.

Ah, actually fired up the wood stove today. First day this winter it is necessary. Went to an open mic last night at Big Fatty's. Gonna be a good place to play. Barbecue, fun, but not rowdy audience, and food and pay. I have gigs scheduled there for March and April. Looking forward to 'em.

Argh, another night of fitful sleep owing to this stubborn infection and all the resultant biffy trips -- oh, well, at least I am getting lots of exercise. Great concert last night in a music series I didn't even know existed -- thank goodness I'm on Pat Donohue's mailing list. It's a group of Shoe Band alums who are calling themselves the Prairie All Stars, and that means mando master Richard Kiehn, bassist Gary Raynor, Pete Johnson on drums and last night there was the extra treat of Butch Thompson on piano. Just a wonderful evening of roots blues classics by the likes of Blind Blake and Jelly Roll Morton, plus originals, a few covers, lots of funny patter and just a constant show of musicianship. Filled a 450-seat high school auditorium that was comfy, had great sight lines and terrific acoustics. Pat alternated between his OM signature Martin, his National reso and whatever brand his Tele is. Only Pat Donohue can make a medley out of "Statesboro Blues" and "Ave Maria." I poop you not. Oh, I forgot to mention the price for this almost-three-hour show -- FIFTEEN BUCKS!!!! Before the show Barb and I had fancy-Dan pizza at a newish place in White Bear Lake -- the crust was excellent, the toppings were tasty, BUT THEY SQUIRTED A BALSAMIC GLAZE ON THE TOP OF THE THING, to "art it up," I guess. Pizza, my friends, is beautiful by itself. It don't need no freaking balsamic squirtin's on it, geez.

I still do not understand Garrison letting Pat go.
Going wine tasting today, Pinot Noir paired with chocolates. It's a tough job, but I'm up for it.

As for GK and Pat, it might have been mutual -- nothing was ever announced, so we may never know and it's not the kind of thing you would point-blank ask Pat, at least I wouldn't. He did some make noises in his patter last night about how cool it is to gather these PHC vets "and play what WE want to play," and he seemed just really joyful onstage. Plus think of all the touring he no longer has to do. I think he is OK with it all. Speaking of PHC, today's live show from St. Paul features Chris Thile again as host, plus Andrew Bird, Maria Bamford, Sarah Jarosz, the rest of the Punch Brothers and some guy named Paul Simon, I think he's from New Yawk.

I'm also going for provisions in a while. First I have to call my ailing friend's husband to see if they need anything. It's getting hard for him to get out now that she has started chemo. While at the grocery store I will have blood drawn for a couple of lab tests. Even if I have to pay out of pocket, it's easier and maybe cheaper than going to my doctor for an annual physical. So I won't be eating until I get home. Man does that pizza look good. I may be asking Mr. H to make a white pizza tonight.

Morning
A day or so of warmish weather, above freezing, and then we drop back into the teens.
Just one customer this morning and then I'm going back to bed.

Back from TJ's, where it was impossible for me to resist picking up a couple of these to try -- hey, all things in moderation (including moderation).

In the hopes that Bob and Mary would want us to carry on with our music chat even as we worry over their situation, was I the only one to catch "Prairie Home Companion" tonight? It might have been the best ever, and although I feel a bit guilty to admit this, I didn't miss GK much at all. I had the stereo cranked and the video feed on my laptop, silenced, as there was a sizable time gap between the two, which kept growing to ridiculous proportions by show's end.
If Chris Thile wrote the early song about the NFL, he is even more of a genius than I already give him credit for. Other than that, watching him and Sarah Jarosz and the others on the live feed was just so uplifting that I can barely express the joy and the talent and the incredible excellence of it all.
That Paul Simon guy, an older fellow, shows promise.

Bill, you may be the only one who caught "Prairie Home Companion" last night. We don't get it until Sunday mornings from the Tucson NPR station. Looking forward to it.

Don't miss it -- our on-the-scene reporter says that after the radio part was over, Thile talked Simon into an encore, and totally unrehearsed, they all launched into "Me and Julio" -- bet that was fantastic. I think you will be impressed by how well Simon's voice has held up -- he must take really good care of it.
