I can only play lap steel with lots of effects, distortion, delay etc. Otherwise it's just too obvious that I know nothing about it. My few lessons didn't help much although playing along with country records is a lot of fun. The young fellow that was "teaching" me claimed that pedal was actually easier than lap. FWIW.

Different beasts. I think it depends on how your brain works. Lap is dragging many chords out of not many options, while pedal steel is just way too many balls to juggle. Pick yer poison.

Bobby BlaƧk is pushing 80. He was in my back yard a few years back after playing at Buck Owens Crystal Palace with Richard Chon, fiddler/ founder/ leader of the western swing band the Saddle Cats. Richard wrote for the Bakersfield paper in the 90s. He settled in my neighborhood and we started to play together.
Bobby was on steel guitar without pedals and every solo he took that night was an original. Bobby is a modest and kind individual.
