Damn you, Doug! A few weeks ago you posted a thread asking for information and advice about condenser mics. The denizens of this forum, being who and what they are, responded with a lot of good stuff. And it cost me a lot of money because I went out and spend my next 10 years allowance on condenser mics. Actually, I ought to thank you, Doug, for starting that thread and everyone else for responding. There was a lot of good information there. I'm having a lot of fun playing with this stuff. I absolutely love how well the the natural sound of my Martin HD-28 is picked up by the Rode NT5 mic. I just put up a new recording on my Reverbnation page: Dark as a DungeonFor those of you who are interested in such things here are the particulars: The recording was done on my Tascam Portastudio DP-24 digital recorder. Guitar: Martin HD-28 recorded with a Rode NT5 small diaphragm instrument mic. Vocal: recorded with a Shure KSM32/SL large diaphragm condenser mic. Bass: Ashbory bass through a Hartke VXL Bass Attack pre amp plugged into the console. Thanks everyone for your input.

You can definitely tell the quality of the microphones that was used in the recording. Nice It's a totally different sound than I'm used to. I've been using a SM58 for vocals and plugging straight into the board for the guitar. I knew the instrument mic would make a big difference. I didn't realize how big a difference there would be with the KSM32/SL. I was astonished by the clarity.

It kind of amazes me the SM58 is still the standard for venues. I know the quaility is good and consistent, and it's kind of bulletproof. But the harshness I hear in venue vocals always bothers me. I suppose you need some of that strength to cut thru the din in a barroom setting. But it's not a pleasing sound. You, on the other hand are very pleasing.

I guess it's Donovan's, but I haven't heard Season of the Witch since Vanilla Fudge.

If you're hearing harshness out of an SM58 my guess is that you can attribute that to a sound tech who isn't listening. A good mic won't make anyone sound better, but if the EQ isn't set correctly at the board it can make you sound worse. A good mic should reproduce your voice more faithfully than a not so good mic. I recall seeing B.B. King at Summerfest a few years ago. If I could think of anyone that I have always associated with great tone, it's B.B. He came out on stage with a great band. They sounded terrible for the first half of his show. I don't know what was wrong with the sound tech but everything sounded bad. It was the first and only time I've ever heard a tenor sax sound like a kazoo. Finally, they got the sound problems worked out and everything was fine. But I was very disappointed with the first half of the show.

I guess it's Donovan's, but I haven't heard Season of the Witch since Vanilla Fudge. Well, it used to be a Donovan song until the blues gang got a hold of it. I highly recommend Dr. John's arrangement from the sound track of the Blues Brothers 2000 movie. I've always liked Dr. John and he voodooed the hell out of it!

I'm kind of half-heartedly looking around for a decent yet fairly inexpensive acoustic that I can ship down to Puerto Rico as it appears that I'm going to be visiting there with some regularity. Maybe I'll find a sunburst that will fill the bill.

I love my GS-mini as a travel guitar. (WHich just so happens to be a sunburst these days). But if I were hunting for something similar, I'd probably try an Eastman travel guitar. www.ebay.com/itm/Eastman-ACTG1-Travel-Guitar-/301922682257?hash=item464bfe8591:g:OKQAAOSwTapV7L2MIt's the same shape and materials as a Taylor GS-mini, but the price is a lot better. I haven't actually tried one. No stores have them. But you can get one on-line Of course it's a short scale. (23" I think). And a 1 11/16 neck. But that works for me. Sounds pretty much like a real guitar too. (The Taylor. I haven't actually tried the Eastman yet). And it fits in an overhead easily. Plus if it gets damaged in any way (transit? rain?) it's not a great loss.

Considering I listened to it on a lap top with a speaker the size of a dime, very nice.

I listened to Dungeon again. That is a mighty fine performance. Merle would be pleased.

I'm a little leery of a 3/4 guitar vs. my big hands.

I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out even though it was more about trying out my new mics than producing something for the 1946 hit parade. And thanks to everyone for your kind and generous comments.
