Worth is subjective, I always find that all the changes they make to create these higher priced models (from what I feel are quality electric guitars in the $1500 - $1800 range) are small and almost imperceptible to most (yet they garner somewhat crazy price increases). As opposed to the standard stop tails it has some things going for it that make it sound and feel different (the two piece stop ala gibson instead of the wrap around like on the mira, an asymmetrical neck that is slightly thicker, low turn 58/15's, a thicker amount of mahogany in the body to change the maple / mahogany ratio, etc.). Also, $3600 is just the jumping in point, they go up from there for the 10-top and Artist Packages.
I may just be too blunt headed to get it, but I find myself usually looking at the prices that some of these are (and anderson / suhr and the like) and just don't see the price /value trade off to be in my favor.
Of course, I can always go downstairs to the shop and build another guitar instead of buying one, so maybe that's where it all comes from.

Ugh. Probably not, Paul. I know way less about PRS than I do Fender and Gibson guitars. My mind is wired like amanajoe's though. There is a really nice stock made-in-Maryland PRS out there that sounds just killer for $1500-$2000 I would think.

What does anybody here know about the PRS McCarty 594 guitar? Is it worth $3600? PRS McCarty 594As far as I know it is made on the same shop floor as all other PRS guitars. But it's price tells me it is fated for the collection of a Guitar Aficionado.

Electrics priced in that range seemed wholly unjustified when a high quality acoustic at that price required substantially more effort. The reason I asked is because I can count on 2 fingers how many electrics I've owned in my life and don't know if I might be missing something. I conclude from the responses that probably not.

A friend of mine who builds and repairs* used to say, "Well, I've got a bandsaw. . . ."
* Not someone known on this forum, though he has built for pro players.

Take a look at the vintage market, Paul. I read a short piece in one of the guitar magazines recently that can be summed up thusly. "People pay exorbitant money for vintage guitars because some of the best rock and roll (was recorded on these instruments. News flash: the guitars weren't vintage when the music was recorded, and many haven't held up well." While I'd love to own one, if I had a spare $400,000 sitting around the house, I for sure wouldn't spend it on a '59 Les Paul.
That said, electric guitar players are no more or less squirrelly that acoustic players when judging instruments. The best advice I've heard remains, "pick it up, plug it in, and decide for yourself whether or not you like the sound."
