Ok, since we're sharing gloomy tunes, here's one I came up with the other morning. The less I say about it the better, except it's true and I wrote it at 4 a.m.
I'm sure I'll tweak it somewhere along the line, and maybe add a chorus. Or not. The meter may sound clunky when the words are read, but it works out fine (enough) when I sing it.

There’s a trust that we hand over There’s a love we siphon off A bargain that we enter Regardless of the cost Before the sun has risen Down streets dark spirits roam I could always lose myself But I knew my way home
Gave my love to you I had never felt so safe But only the strong survive the things Lovers do and lovers say When you lost your faith in me You said I was reaping what I’d sown I could always lose myself But I knew my way home
You can box up all my memories Send ‘em in the mail Include the past-due bills I got Every time I failed Promises we broke obscure The love we left alone And while I could always lose myself I knew my way home
Streetlights of Minneapolis Cross the Parkway bridge into St. Paul Shadows on the river Sure to hide my fall I’d call you one last time But you stopped picking up the phone I hope life treats you well I know my way home

Wow, David -- that is amazing stuff, very powerful and obviously true. Hang in there, friend, OK? I'd love to play along on that song sometime.

We can try it at the next open mike at the Coffee Grounds. It's in E. Just E, A and B. Felt I should keep the melody simple.

Well. You sure now how to pur out an emotion, David.
I hope it's cathartic for you to spill these tunes out. You've got a fire in there that burns bright.
Be good.

I never really look at songwriting as cathartic, although I know people who do. And it may well be for them. My songs are pretty much just snapshots. Some pictures have more color in them than others.

You almost always have a lot of power in your songs, David, and this one's no exception.
Songs aside, hang in there.
