I really like this, and that whole era in British folk music, though I'll confess I didn't know about her. The resemblance to June Tabor is striking.

I think that June said that her public singing journey started after seeing Anne performing in a folk club. If I start a June Tabor thread too soon, the internet might just shut down and go and cry in a corner. I'm restraining myself.

I dare say you're familiar with it, if not, the 'Folk Britannia' BBC4 series is on YouTube and is not too shabby.

Go for it! You might cultivate mixed feelings about Ewan McColl!

Oh yes. Anne Briggs makes me smile. So does Bert.
I love me some Jimmy Page too, but it wouldn't have killed him to give credit where credit was due.

Thompson's 'Beeswing' is rumoured to have been written with Anne Briggs in mind. Her early recordings are really beautiful and soulful, sometimes they don't really take off until half a minute in. Then she starts to properly, emotionally inhabit the song and simply soars.
