Had mechanical brakes? Not me but my folks had one in the early 50s that required my mother to put both feet on the break pedal and stand up to stop, but I don't think it went over 30mph.
Had a tube type radio with one of those vibrating things to provide AC. Yep 52 and 55 Chevy
Had vacuum windshield wipers, that stopped when you went up hill. Yep same two Chevys

Never had a car I had to hand crank to start, either.

Never had a car I had to hand crank to start, either. I had a MGA and a TR3 that had the slots for a hand crank but didn't come with the crank. I'm guessing that most of us over 60 have had vacuum wipers and tube radios but not mechanical brakes (I don't know when they went away)

Good call Rob. Forgot that one. That lasted well into the '60s.
From Googling seems the last car with mechanical brakes was the English Ford Popular in '62. That seems late to me but most cars went to hydraulic brakes in the '30s.

This all came to me yesterday while driving the VW in the rain. Intermittent wipers are Doug turning them off and on.

Ever had a car with air shocks? It was so cool driving like you’re going downhill all the time.

Ever ride in a car that could do a wheelie?
So, I went to visit my mom on mothers day many years ago. As I was leaving I saw an old friend next door visiting his mom as well. We got to talking and he told me his car could lift the front wheels off the ground. I called BS on that. He said lets go for a ride.
We went about a mile away and he did a couple of burn outs then he took off and amazingly the dashboard rose up. He quickly backed off the gas and we drove back. Now I can’t even remember what kind of car it was, but I remember that “Holy Crap“ feeling.

Never had a car with mechanical brakes nor one that I had to crank. I did have a lot of experience crank starting tractors when I was a kid. Bruised the hell out of myself more than once.
Not only have I had cars with tube radios I've had cars with no radios.
My first car was a 1950 Dodge 2-door. It had a windshield visor on the outside, window vents, and fluid drive. What a transmission! Once you got it going you could shift into 2nd and 3rd without touching the clutch. It wasn't much on looks or speed but it was reliable and got me where I needed to go.

My first car was a VW Beetle. It had a heater that was connected to the gas pedal so if you took your foot off the gas, the heater stopped. I used to pull up to stoplights, throw it in neutral and floor it to keep warm. It think it had brakes. It used to stop, anyway. The back seat would fold down so I could get two friends, a couple of amps and 3-4 guitars in there. Comfort was sacrificed, of course, but we got the important stuff in. 4 of us could pick it up and move it.

I had a car that had no floor or seats. I simply stood inside the frame. To go forward I walked forward. To back up I walked backwards. And if I wanted to go fast I ran.
Prehistorically yours, Fred Flintstone
btw. Did you know that the people of Dubai don't like the Flintstones? But apparently the people of Abu Dhabi do.

"Penalty - Roughing the kicker. Car-Talk is a time honored subject matter on the Soundhole. Automatic first down." . . , (Automatic?) True, my sincere apologies. Dimmer switch on the floor--check. Vacuum wipers--check. Tube radio--check. (And I doubt anyone today would know how to set the channels.)

OK, the radio had several toggle-type switches below the tuner dial. You'd tune in a station, then toggle up a switch to "memorize" the location. Ditto for the other switches. When they were all set, you would switch among them with downward toggle movements.
Right?
