Hi Phil, welcome. I'm the group's token writer-of-historical-mysteries-set-in-colonial-North-Carolina-during-the-French-and-Indian-War. Well, I've written one, and a sequel is in the oven. I own three Martins and three banjos, all of which I play just enough to annoy people.

Phil, I have a First Edition copy of said historical fiction that I will autograph and send you for a nominal fee. It's sort of the secret decoder ring that we use to decipher the secret messages hidden in the posts. The code key is extra, of course.

Welcome Phil!
I too have retired from the halls of education having been a public school Speech/Language pathologist. Now I get paid in hugs and kisses for my part time job as care provider for 2 beautiful grand darlings. I am also a card carrying member, along with Todd, of the I Prefer To Play in G club. π We all have a purpose in this world and I believe mine is to remind other musicians just how far they have come!
Looking forward to meeting you should our roads take us to Vinton this fall!
Cyndy

Looking forward to meeting you should our roads take us to Vinton this fall! Cyndy As one who regularly plays bluegrass, the G Club has been my friend, but with a capo I can access most keys our fiddle player likes to do. This new group has a perchance for B and B flat along with an occasional C. Getting use to it but it was a change for me. The hugs and kisses from grand darlings sounds like living the good life. All of our grandkids live quite a ways from us and we see them about once a year. Our son (who has three of our grandkids) lives in New Orleans. Good job for him but the downside is the distance from Iowa.

I should have qualified my post! I do homage to the Goddess of Capo as well as I can rarely sing in G. π

Cyndy, I've found D to be a brave new world. Every play in D?

How 'bout F? Eb? F#? Now we're talking! Actually, in my humble opinion and in case one misplaces their capo, it shouldn't be an onerous task to play simple progressions in any key.

I agree that we should be able to play in other keys and D is not bad, however E flat is a nemesis of mine. Never was good, therefore the CAGED system has eluded me for some time.

Cyndy, I've found D to be a brave new world. Every play in D? πππππ Good on you, Todd <nods with admiration> Yah but then there's that "damn Bm", a chord whose name is always preceded by that adjective! I'll take the F in C any day over that chord (through use of the lovely lovely capo--which I NEVER forget π)!

Really? I love the BM7 chord. It creates the illusion that I know what I'm doing. Are you barring it? If so, there's an easy cheat.

My cheat is an X04432. I think. Unless I wrote it backwards.

Here's an exercise. I may have made it up (I've never heard of anyone else doing it) and it may just be crazy but try playing the "cowboy chords", in the first position or with a capo, using all but the index finger. In other words, the second finger takes over for the first etc. This will put you in good stead, as your fingers strengthen, so that you can put the index down as a barre anywhere and voila ... Bob's your uncle. It's capoing without a capo.

My cheat is an X04432. I think. Unless I wrote it backwards. I think this is in error -- it sounds, um, not great and there's nothing B about it.

Whatever it is, it seems to work. What is it?

I usually tune that to B. He has the D on the 2nd string, F# on the first and 4th strings and the open A 5th. Bm7 unless you really nee that high A.

My bad, I thought I "memorized" what Todd wrote, walked into a next room and grabbed a guitar and fingered it entirely wrong.
