No I'm not going to do a step by step, that would be an insane amount of work. Every cut or step is a different milling procedure that gets repeated for each winder, about 30 steps per winder and that's just for the winders, then I make the handles. But I did get started today by choosing wood and figuring out how many I will be making out of that wood. The chosen woods will be Brazilian and Bubinga for guitar string winders and Brazilian, Bubinga and Birdseye Maple for mandolin winders. The Bubinga stock is made of 1/4" pieces laminated together, it's done so well that at first I didn't even realize the stuff was laminate. Not until I looked very closely while figuring out which way I wanted the grain to run did I notice the lamination's. It's very handsome wood and being laminated just makes it stronger. Light reddish brown with a close wavy grain. The Brazilian for the guitar winders is a nice milk chocolate brown and a few pieces may get some cream sapwood running through, this looks really nice. The Brazilian for the mandolin/electric guitar/12 string winders is a dark chocolate color. The Birdeye Maple is some old stock that I had sized to make mandolin winders long ago but never got around to making them. There was one prototype Cocobolo mandolin winder made years ago, SecondRoy got it. Out of the chosen wood I will get 64 blanks to start with. 43 guitar and 21 mandolin. That does not mean I will get 64 winders when done. Hidden flaws and the occasional screw up will probably cut that down to 40 even if I pay attention to what I'm doing.

If you used 5.56 casings you could be looking at an IPO next year.

If you used 5.56 casings you could be looking at an IPO next year. I don't understand that. I used .223 brass cut off on both ends to make bushings for the swing arm lamp I made. so I guess you could do that for the brass part of the string winders.

Ring up Marshall for the sunburst! He has it, I pinned his arm behind his back until he bought it.

Ok, now I get it. While the casing is long enough it's too large diameter wise to fit the inside nylon roller bearings and cap bushings on the ends. It would be rather wobbly.

Ring up Marshall for the sunburst! He has it, I pinned his arm behind his back until he bought it. Yeah. That's an old photo. The sunburst is in my possession. I've actually got 2 Marty Reynold's string winders at the moment. One, SteveO gave to me. The sunburst I bought. I bought another one that I gave away on the Millring Harmony guitar auction; to the guy who won the auction and decided to donate the guitar back to millring. Gave him a string winder for his generosity.

I am a strangely sentimental person. I have the old white, now somewhat yellowed, plastic one I bought in my sordid youth. It's cheap, it works, and I have had it for 40+ years. Otherwise I'd love an MR winder. The odd things we cannot let go of.

You misspelled "millring". I noticed that, too. It is a major diss (dis?) for which you should not stand. Demand a free winder as a forgiveness offering. I have one. They are great.
