The "ian" curse seems to be official these days. I first noticed it when Bobby Jindal constantly said "Louisianians" instead of the more familiar & mellifluous Louisianans. Bobby was always precise to a fault so I figured it was official. I wonder how Nebraskian Jeff Miller feels about this. It does seem that some states have this better than others. At one end, probably the best is "New Yorker". That just works. "Floridian" is pretty cool. Kind of lyrical. "West Virginian" is smooth. So is "Washingtonian". "Texan" is easy. Sounds sort of badass. "Wyomingite" is clumsy. So is "Massachusettsan". "Arkansan", standing alone, is fine, but it seems wrong to re-cast the accent from the base state name: "AR-can-saw" vs "ar-CAN-sen". Not smooth. "Oklahoman" and "Nebraskan" and "North Dakotan" and the like seem to lose something. "Minnesotan" doesn't sound bad, unless you imagine Jesse Ventura saying it.

According to the Government Publication Office, "Alabamian" is correct. Here is a list of demonyms (I didn't know such a word existed) for every state.

I never really thought about this before, but you could say "Minnesotian" and pronounce the "tian" the same as in "Martian." Or the same as in "Christian." Lots of different options here.

That's why they shortened it to "Hoosier." They couldn't spell "Indianaianian."

I think "Alabamans" is properly correct, but most of us would say "Alabamians". Whatever we are, we are sick of hearing about this election. I wonder if we should respect that here.

I am a transplanted Nebraskan who is now a Wisconsinite. Sounds like a substance that robs Superman of his super powers.
Not having anything interesting or clever to say about this subject I'll return to the thread.
Today the pundits were all but wetting themselves explaining last night's election results as the demise of the Bannon/Trump Republican Party.
What they seem to have missed was that the Republican candidate was so deeply flawed that the Bannon/Trump ideology didn't play a huge part. This was not a repudiation of Republican politics. It was a repudiation of Roy Moore.
In the final analysis Moore's interest in teenage girls didn't seem to be the real tipping point. There was a massive turnout of black voters, nearly all of whom voted for Jones. It seems reasonable to me that they may have been swayed by Moore's statement that all would be good except for the amendments to the Constitution that came after the 10th amendment. And some of this other racist tinged remarks.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread drift.

"Wisconsinan" refers to the last episode of continental glaciation, which produced the present landscape of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and the northern portions of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Glaciers might have dipped into Iowa, but mostly Iowa was barren ground with clouds of dust blowing around, leaving thick deposits of dust known as loess. Sorta like the deposits of dust on Todd's Jeep produced by driving the gravel roads between Vinton and Garrison.
Please spare a thought for those of us residing in Michigan and known as Michiganders. Some Michigan women are saddled with the term "Michigoose"

I agree with Lar, The media is wallowing in their ecstasy over Mooreâs defeat a bit too much. Thank God it happened though.
I think secretly the Republicans are breathing a sigh of relief.
Roy Moore is still waiting for that miracle. Incomprehensible that God could let such a travesty happen.
