When going from AZ to WA we always stop in OR for gas just to get someone to pump it.

For the brief two years I was out of the Army the first time, I worked as an account executive for a recruiter based near Tacoma. Many of our clients were in Portland. The first time my co-worker, Bentley, and I went on a visit, he pulled a good one on me. About 5 minutes from the Washington-Oregon border, he looked over and said, "Hey, we need gas. I bet you $5 the dude at the gas station will tell you we can't pump our own gas." Being clueless, I fell for it.

Oregonians are kind of timid, huh? I wonder how they feel about self-checkout in the grocery store? Probably don't want to smell like eggs.

I am trying to figure how long it has been since an attendant pumped gas for me. 35-40 years?

There’s a place in Vinton that is still full-service. If you’re old enough. Someone like me pulls up and they just wave out the window.

I have a Ph.D in Gas Pumping. Gas pumping is best not left to the uneducated. I will be teaching a 6 week master class in Gas Pumpology in major shopping centers and abandoned buildings throughout Oregon starting next week. Total cost is $1500 per student and not only will successful students receive a certificate stating them to be Pump Ready, they will also be given 3 pairs of rubber gloves to wear when pumping gas. Oregonians, watch your local paper for announcements about the course.

I'm not sure I could find a station with attendants if I had to.

New Jersey is the only place I know that still has attendants and you can't pump your own gas.

Difference between going to McDs and going to a nice restaurant with waiters. You can get gas at either place.

I am surprised by how many people don't know that, in MN at least, it is illegal to leave a car unattended while pumping gas. They'll start the pump and then go inside to pick up a few items while the car fills up, not a good idea.

Having to pump your own gas is like having to cook your own meal when going to a restaurant.
Perhaps, with a bit more time, maturity and consideration, the rest of the states will catch on to this civilized view of fueling vehicles.

I've seen people yapping on their phones, which is supposedly a no-no. And I've seen them sitting inside while the car is being fueled, a bad idea cuzza possible static electricity when getting out.

Life was better when you got your gas pumped, oil checked, windshield cleaned and tires aired when you pulled into a "Service Station". And teenage boys* could find a job.
Edit And some girls my sister pumped gas for a while in HS.

I have seen them pumping and smoking! Almost got into a fight 20 years ago (I was obviously younger) when I slapped the cigarette out of the hand of a young punk at the next pump who insisted it was his right to endanger my family. Today, I would just leave. Sometimes wisdom comes with age. Sometimes age travels alone.
