I think it's a great idea. They can use the 700,000-square-kilometer mass of plastic bottles as a foundation to keep it afloat. We could all sit back and watch a "Lord of the Flies" scenario unfold. Then we'd have a lot to talk about here regarding human nature and government regulation.

Yeah, they didn't mention how the floating island would be powered, inboard or outboard. They may be waiting for results from the bog trial.

The Atopia Chronicles come to life.
Actually if they could get away with the "separate sovereign" nation thingy they might attract the moneyed and those with intellectual property to leverage, it might actually work for a while. At least till they piss off someone with a Navy. Or someone with a Navy decides to "annex" them.

The concept has been floated many times, (bad pun intended.) I think the logistics don't make it viable.

Oh, sure, ridicule away. When Guam tips over and thousands drown, the laughter will die down.

Sci-fi film plot: 300 billionaires and their 600 servants escape the climate disaster on a luxurious artificial island that can be moved away from the advancing heat, remaining in the “agriculturally-viable zone.” All is well until they are boarded by a couple of thousand raft-bound “heat refugees.” Much human psychology and social engineering ensues, but in the end, yes, the place is much more crowded, but the billionaires just end up with a lot more servants.
Working title: Mad Maximum Return on Investment.
