Deb and I spent last summer on projects around the house and have decided that this year we would do our best to do a back country hike once a week. We're getting to the point where "while we still can" is a growing part of the equation. Last week we visited Lower Sand Creek Lake which is in the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, sandwiched between the National Park and the Sangre de Cristos. Lower Sand Creek Lake Sophie- by Paul Leach, on Flickr Yesterday we did Lily Lake, a hike we've heard about but the trailhead is 1 1/2 hours away so we hadn't done it yet with so many other trailheads within 30 minutes of here. The pictures do tell the story, it was a fabulous day. After only 15 minutes on the trail, we emerged from the trees to this inviting vista. 2018 June 5 Lily Lake- by Paul Leach, on Flickr A "Where's Waldo" photo with Deb and Sophie 2018 June 5 Lily Lake--4 by Paul Leach, on Flickr Here is Lily Lake with Blanca Peak behind. Lovely...and majestic, and I assume over 10,000 feet.

Lovely...and majestic, and I assume over 10,000 feet. The trailhead is about 10,600 feet and the the lake an air sucking elevation of 12,354

Beautiful, Paul! Days don't get much better than that.
By the way, good for you for planning to get out regularly! It's easy to live in a great place and seldom take advantage of it because daily tasks eat up all your time. I've gone through periods where I did it. For the last year and a half I've been getting out of town a lot more.

That sensation that hits you when you unexpectedly emerge from a mountain trail or road into an alpine meadow filled with wildflowers and ringed by jagged peaks is just wonderful.
So cool.

That's great, Don. Not having a job helps a lot doesn't it . Sometimes the hardest thing is the getting started but it's always rewarding to be out there.

Gorgeous. I am quite envious -- it has been many years since I have been in Colorado.

Is that the lake at the base of Mt. Evans? I've only seen it from above, but that cliff face sure seems familiar.
