‘Morning. Seems like things in here are mostly going well. Me too. At this point, I’ve got new oil, new tires and tie rods, new alignment, shorter hair, all my laundry done, and I’m feeling reasonably practiced up for my recital at the UW next weekend. Grades are in; summer can start. K and I had a lovely time watching our beloved old student tear it up at the Rocket gig last night. Life is good. Have a great day, all.

The most contentious debate I had yesterday was whether any of the New Testament was written in Aramaic, or just plain old ancient Greek. Folks are very invested in making sure everyone understands that that shit was just made up by some charlatans w-a-y future from the eye witnesses. Just a little stick in the eye of notions of inspiration. If the narrative was unbroken from the events to the writing, then the story can be one of redemption. If not, we've got a mythological morality play. The latter won the day in elite scholarship of the 20th century. Thus devoid of inspiration, the pews emptied.

Hmmmmm I can't think of one fellow backslider who would give the statement posted above as the answer to the question: "Why did you quit going to church"? I'm sure they exist but I have never met one. Speaking for myself (and maybe more than a few like minded unsalted, savorless individuals) I usually give a smart alec answer along the lines of "Church is infested with preachers" or something else denigrating to those fine upstanding individuals. The last one who asked I replied: "I have literally met hundreds of preachers in my decades of attendance and the number I respect can be counted on half of my left hand". I usually slide away while they process that with mouth agape.

I usually slide away while they process that with mouth agape. I've never really given it much thought. My redemption or lack thereof is not predicated on God's opinion of anyone else, or vice versa for that matter. I'm happy to tell you why I go to church if you ask, but what you do is not really germane.

Don't care much for preachers, but I have good memories of a number of clerics--a couple of my theology/philosophy profs, the priest who married us, a Methodist minister who taught English here, the fatherly old pastor who gave my father instruction when he converted. There were, of course, a number of assholes, snobs, bullies, and bigots, but the collar doesn't provide protection from the usual run of failings and follies.
