In the past couple of years or so, I have noticed an increasing and most annoying habit among many of my fellow motorists -- coming up to a line of cars stopped at a red light and not pulling up to the car stopped in front of him/her. Sometimes they leave gaps of like two car lengths, and of course this can cause all kind of problems behind them, such as blocking people from getting to a turn lane or just delaying the whole line of vehicles when the light turns green.
I don't get it -- why would people DO this???

THE BORDER REIVERS - THE CURSEIn 1525 the reivers had become such a nuisance that the then Archbishop of Glasgow, Gavin Dunbar, put a curse upon all the reivers of the borderlands. "I curse their head and all the hairs of their head; I curse their face, their brain (innermost thoughts), their mouth, their nose, their tongue, their teeth, their forehead, their shoulders, their breast, their heart, their stomach, their back, their womb, their arms, their leggs, their hands, their feet, and every part of their body, from the top of their head to the soles of their feet, before and behind, within and without."

Leaving space means it’s easier to leave the lane if you need to, and you’re less likely to get smashed into the car in front of you on a rear end collision.

I don't get it -- why would people DO this??? Might be a security thing. Many, if not most, personal security specialists specifically recommend leaving enough space in front of you when stopped at a light that you could haul ass to one side or the other if need be. As well, motorcyclists are taught to do this in advanced rider safety courses, so that habit might carry over to their car driving. I *always* leave a car length in front of me at lights and, if you saw the hard drinkin’ Lincoln in person, you’d appreciate the fact that the resultant space rivals unincorporated Alaska. Or not, just throwing it out there as a theory.

It happens all the time on 4th street here in Vinton. It's the scourge of our times.

I'm talking about rush-hour driving where there are multiple lanes of cars at busy intersections, waiting for the light to change. Kinda the opposite of Vinton....

They are texting. You need some personal space.

Oh, don't get me started.
How about when you go to pass somebody, you look behind you and see there's a car well behind you in the passing lane, but not overtaking, just going with the flow of traffic, so you turn on your turn signal to indicate your intention of pulling out, and you start to pull out, and then that guy behind you decides to stomp on the accelerator, almost causing an accident. And then acts all huffy, like he thinks YOU were trying to cut HIM off.
A curse on the fuzzy hairs on the top of his otherwise bald crown, a curse on his earlobes....

I always leave 8.5 car lengths between me and the person ahead of me at a stoplight. I use a 1989 Cadillac Seville as the reference car length.

I don't leave a lot of distance but I do leave some because I have 2 dimensional sight. Depth perception and I are strangers. Lonnie had the same problem but I don't know what he did while driving. What I have noticed here though is that the cameras that control the lights don't seem to see white cars and trucks very well. When I go into a turn lane assuming there's no one behind me I'll stop a few times before I get to the stripe. I think the computer counts motions as waiting vehicles. If I stop 5 times in the turn lane I get a light. If I don't I may have to wait for a few light changes before I get a turn light. We used to do something similar when they had weight sensors in the road but now that it's cameras I've had to find a new way to trigger the lights. Stopping 5 times seems to do it. I don't need to do it with the gold Buick, just the white Subaru and I've seen other white cars and trucks sitting waiting through light changes and not getting their turn.

Lead singer Rasp Putin never made it to the end of a concert without getting arrested. He is 79 now and is a resident in the Orange County Moral Crisis Home for the Wickedly Simple.

I leave some space now, but not as much as I used to. Once I internalized the fact that the chances of me getting targeted by a VBIED in Platte City were pretty small, I relaxed enough to close it up a bit.
Funny stuff we do, no?

Bruce and I actually have something in common. One of my eyes has never worked well and, as a result, I have poor depth perception.* I don't leave a large space in front of me at lights but I leave a space. *I suppose that might imply that I see things in a shallow way.

Around here the lights are triggered by induction coils buried under the asphalt. The loops are activated by the metal of the car. Look for that area, park on it for a moment, move up a foot, repeat. The traffic loops will forget about you if you stay in one spot. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Inductive_loop_detector.gif
