RBG is likely to resign in the near future. Trump is likely to nominate Amy Coney Barrett.
In the grand tradition of Supreme Court dignity and decorum, her nomination will be greeted with near-universal enthusiasm, and embraced as just the thing a weary nation needs to heal the ugly wounds of division we currently suffer.

Imagine the shock when the DNC realizes that both Joe Biden and JFK are/were Catholics.

Transcript of the oral arguments from the first case she'll hear on the SC: Building the wall is immoral. But really, let's quit pretending: The concept of citizenship itself is immoral. It is nothing but a vestige of the white, European, patriarchal system used historically to oppress POC. Why should government benefits be limited to the artificial, socially constructed category of person arbitrarily called "citizens"? There is no defense of such limitations. They are based only on racism and bigotry. Attempts to whitesplain (or worse, whitemansplain) such limits are inherently racist. And why are government benefits limited by location? What moral justification is there to insist that someone make the dangerous amd harrowing journey to the US in order to receive US government benefits? It's just another arbitrary way, discrimination by location, the racist patriarchy oppresses POC. Medicare For All? What about people in Guatemala or Honduras or Liberia? Do we think that just because they are brown-skinned we can ignore them? More racism and oppression. Oppose Trumps wall all you want, but unless you are willing to open up every Federal program to everyone in the world, you're just another cog in the racist, patriarchal machine.

In all seriousness, I genuinely hope this process, whenever it happens, doesn't turn into a total shitshow.
Who knows? RBG may be doing better than the speculation would indicate. She may not retire for years.
She hasn't made any secret of her opinion of Trump, and I think it's obvious she doesn't want him nominating her successor.
I was just struck by a thought this morning that if this does happen in the relatively near future, it could be the spark that sets off something we really don't want to see.

I do know that a President Romney or a President McCain or a President Dole or even a President Either Bush would nominate a left-leaning justice this time on the false but intractable idea hammered home by the press and the Democrats that the court is supposed to be "balanced".... ....while no Democrat in history has ever made such a consideration. Every moderate, every question mark on the court, without exception, has been a Republican nominee. Every hardcore leftist is a Democratic nominee. And what's different about Trump is that nobody knows what he'll do.

Most of you guys (with notable exceptions) are too young to remember the JFK campaign in detail but his Catholicism was a hugely contentious issue. There was serious talk of the Pope arriving by submarine to take the reins if Jack was elected.
The nuns in the parochial high school I attended were ecstatic when he won. Little did they know that Jack was truly a Jack Catholic.

But it's pretty clear that the definition of "shitshow" resides in the eyes of the person speaking and has become almost inevitable. So let's get on with it. Break the machine so we can get to starting over faster. To me that's not a bad thing.
