Just watched some guy take a stab at this on America's Got Talent. He did ok, but I objected to all the fawning from the judges.
Lydia starts objecting to my objecting. She does vocals at school, and was quite impressed.
I said I'd show her how it's done, and dialed up an HD vid of Pavarotti singing the same part.
Its a rare moment when a 17 year old girl is rendered speechless, but I came close. As Luciano's voice thundered through the crescendo, his face twisted with emotion at his triumph, she just whispered, "Jesus".

Seems like everybody on a talent show takes a stab at Nessun Dorma, when the vast majority of them shouldn't. I love what you did for Lydia, and thrilled that she was impressed.

As it should be.

Its like when female singers take on "I Will Always Love You". The audience can't help but compare the performance to Whitney Houston's, and the singer's chances of standing up to that are not good.

That's one reason I do mostly originals. This is the best you're ever going to hear this song sung.

Or you can avoid the singing...

In a music history class, in a galaxy far far away, in a university a long time ago, the subject of modern rock singers vs old "opera" singers came up while I was at the helm. U2 and Bono was still all the hotness then, so we came up with a class consensus as to one of his best recorded performances. So, one of the students brought the U2 CD to the next class, and I brought the well-known live recording of Pavarotti doing "nessun dorma" (this was long before youtube made instant comparos possible). We listened to Bono sing his heart out, and then I played that Pavarotti track. Pretty much the same response as Lydia, times 35 or 40. I mean, it was like an octagon match between Royce Gracie and that school yard bully from your small-town middle school: not even the same league, let alone ballpark. And I’m a fan of early U2, mind, but that’s just the way it is.

A quintessential piece of music, not just in the operatic repertoire, but in musical world as a whole.
A slightly different version:

(We are fortunate that this is sung in Italian, otherwise the lyrics, and the plot of whole opera, don't make much sense. When the chorus enters with a lovely passage in the middle of the aria, they are essentially singing "We're all gonna die"}
