We are new to RV travel. We always traveled by hotel hopping. Hotels don’t put through credit charges when you reserve a room. Only at the time of the stay. It seems like the camp grounds take the funds at the time of the reservation (which could be months before the visit). Is this common with campgrounds to do this?

Not sure about private campgrounds anywhere else, but the Minnesota State Parks camping reservations take the money when you make the reservation.

Also too new to RVing to have a reliable answer. Check with Mike Wonder too. He's part of an Airstream group.

Yeah, I think it's pretty common for them to charge at least a portion of your stay immediately. You'll want to check on their refund policies if you think there is a chance you will have to cancel. Some offer liberal refund policies, others, not so much. I think running a campground involves a lot of work. Some places are well run, helpful, and a delight to deal with. Some are less than solid. Some have electrical pedestals that are dangerous to use. We use and recomend the "Allstays" app for your phone. It lets you look at a map of a area and lists all the campgrounds, stores, gas stations, etc with links to reviews of the campgrounds with pics. We try to stay away from the people cooking meth at the campsite.
