I haven’t watched Part 2 yet so the missing masters may be in that one.
Watching these really highlights something I’ve long thought interesting if not remarkable. For the most part, they each employ a different technique. They hold the pick in different ways, some pick from the elbow with a stiff wrist like Doc, others use more wrist motion, Rice seems to do most of it by flexing his thumb and index, but in spite of what most people regard as “best” practice, each of these masters deviates from that in significant ways. One lesson here might be, if you find a grip and technique that helps you play what you want, stick with it.

I call mine "Sledgehammer", whichever finger is available to hit the string containing the note I want at the time. When I was trying to learn to play banjo, just a little, using "Banjo for Dummies" I flunked the chapter on "Clawhammer".

I remember a post from way back in the AG TTT days -- there was a summit of sorts with four of these guys sharing a stage. The comment was made that one of them was doing it wrong.😉

One lesson here might be, if you find a grip and technique that helps you play what you want, stick with it. Ira Gitlin, who gave me a few guitar and banjo lessons a few years ago (but don't blame him for the outcomes) tried to teach me something like that, build in a little flexibility to make the stroke snap. It's one of many refinements that I'm still working on. Okay, along with a few basics too.
