I like the fact that everybody seems to have gotten what they deserve in this tangled mess. I love the fact that the ride now exists as autonomous and I predict a record-breaking turnout next year.

True that. More or less, anyway. I'm put off by the fact that the only DMR employee to take a direct hit was the original reporter. Feels like the suits hung him out to dry, and ignored their own culpability in the whole business.

This Iowan says what a sordid mess, and it's embarrassing how the whole thing has been handled on all sides. What I think about is the fact that RAGBRAI has been going on since 1973, and was started by some really cool people whom Iowans respect. And in Iowa, it's a huge deal. Towns vie for a year to get RAGBRAI to pass through their towns; having RAGBRAI pass through does not only brings in income, but brings in a sense of pride to a tiny spot in the world that only locals ever see. Imagine how a town of 500 people would feel when they realize that thousands of people from all over the world will be descending upon them. The route is on the local news from when the route is announced to when the cyclists are actually passing through. I get the issue, but in a year or two no one will. That's the problem.

Okay. People were pissed at the Register for what they did to Carson King and were thus questioning whether to continue supporting RAGBRAI because of its association with the Register. Juskiewicz wanted to assure people that his organization did not support the Register's actions but the Register would not let him do that.
Now I have enough information to understand.

That’s it!
There’s really no connection between King and RAGBRAI. The problem is that people come from around the globe to do RAGBRAI and they have no connection with “The newspaper that depends upon all Iowa.” These people are behind King and think The Register/Gannett is acting horribly. Then they realize that doing RAGBRAI probably supports The Register and they get pissed.

Clearly the original article was written for an audience that already knows what RAGBRAI is, it's history and the connection to the Register. Not great for the rest of us.

By the way, RAIN (Ride Across INdiana) only takes one day. Top to bottom would take longer.

I'm considering riding in RARI next year (Ride Across Rhode Island), provided there are support vans.

I know you grew up with that paper, and Iowans have been growing up with RAGBRAI for 48 years. Yes, the paper screwed up, but it's still all a shame that it happened at all.

I sincerely doubt that any of this would have happened without Gannett involvement -- this chain is a pariah on the craft and I would refuse to work for any paper that was taken over by them. Both the paper I work for and the DMR were once proud holdings of the Cowles family, and respected and reliable over the decades. My employer went through some sketchy ownership in the mid-2000's but wound up with a benevolent owner, Glen Taylor, thank goodness.

They ruined the paper. Mike

Our Gannett-owned Indy Star is but a shell of a newspaper. They have dropped nearly every column or feature that they had to pay for while also raising the price.
