Good morning.
Since Doc was wondering, the open mic went well last night. It was kind of like old home week with people welcoming me back after my absence, lots of hugs from the female fans, the organizer and the owner happy to see me back on stage. The place was busy, lots of acts but I got 5 songs in:
Urge for Going, Joni Mitchell,
Pussy-willows Cattails by Gordon Lightfoot
The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell,
Four Strong Winds, Ian Tyson
The Last Thing on My Mind, Tom Paxton
Had 2 more on the playlist but my time was up.
There were guys at the table stage left, 3 20-somethings and one older. The younger ones were staring at my hands like maybe they'd never seen finger-style playing up close and the older guy was motioning to the one to his left as though maybe he was explaining what I was doing. Anyway, when I left the stage one of the younger ones said "That was great, thank you". I said "Thank you". Got some other thank yous while making my way to the back of the room where the performers congregate. Apparently my Martin sounded good because several other players wanted to look at it. It's nothing special but it works. One woman who teaches music at the community college here said I sounded great. I'll take it. Frankly the stage monitor was so loud and treble that I suspected it sounded lousy but I guess it was OK out in the room. The guy who had been handling the sound moved to Florida so the house system was turned on and it was what it was. As long as the audience is happy, it's OK I wasn't going to mess with it.
I had my usual 12-oz Dewars and water to get me through the set, which is mostly ice-water with a little Scotch to clear my throat. After I played I ordered a regular Dewars and water but got a 4-oz Dewars no ice, no water, so I nursed that for the rest of the evening and didn't get charged for it so it was a good night. Guess I'll have to keep practicing and go again.
Happy Thursday.
