"In lieu of flowers, Ken asked that everyone wear black armbands and wail in public during a one-year grieving period. If that doesn't work, how about donating a book to the public libraries in Granger or Indianola?" Ken Fusion, formerly of the Des Moines Register.

That is good. I was cleaning my office yesterday and unearthed my Dad's funeral card. IMG_3387 by Terence Kennedy, on Flickr

I love a well-written obit that actually tells you something about the person. And it is hard to beat writing your own. I suggest everyone give it a try. In four decades as a reporter, I have no idea how many obits I wrote, but I know I always worked hard on them because I knew families would be cutting them out and saving them for decades. The job (done properly) was hard enough, but that's a lot of pressure.
The last story I wrote for publication was my late brother's obit. Seemed like an appropriate way to close out a career.
