Another thing that Trump's done that nobody else has seemed to accomplish. TalibanAt least my wife should be able to get a week of peaceful sleep.

Well, it gives us cover to safely get out. That's something and that's all that I expect. Other than that, it's just handing the keys to the country back to the Taliban. Not good, but no one else in the country was able to take the wheel.

Not good, but no one else in the country was able to take the wheel. Yeah. That's what it is. But,crap, how long do we have to be on the hook for a worthless piece of dirt. I imagine we'll still be on the hook financially, until the Taliban takes over. Then I can't see giving them any $$. I feel for the good people of Ashcanistan. There's got to be a handful of them.

I don’t know that there’ll be millions, but all the good things that were built will go. Women will be back to being chattels, and all those young girls who hoped to be doctors and politicians will find themselves back to being nothing again.
Then we’ll see if the Taliban are stupid enough to attack a major superpower a second time. And if they do, we’ll see if whomever it is they attack is simply smart enough to kick their asses up to the backs of their heads and leave.

I share the frustration and understand frustration can drive language (as when I refer to Saudi Arabia as a shithole bound for hell). But, sadly, we all know Afghanistan is filled with good people (some of whom are in the Taliban, even).
Afghanistan does share the same issue (South) Vietnam did. Both countries have/had a large urban center that to a certain degree adopted Western values and to a very definite degree prospered under the invasion of these values. And both countries have/had a much larger group of "everyone else" who didn't and haven't (adopted or prospered by).
Saigon prospered under the French. The French brought money, lots and lots of it, and they brought foreign values and a foreign religion. And those who adopted or pretended to adopt this invasion of values got their hands on a winning money ticket. But the rest of the country, especially, most especially, the rural areas received no benefit whatsoever from the French occupation, just shit. And that was the winless mess we stepped into when the French left. There were a bunch of folks in Saigon, many of them carpet-bagging Catholic converts, who were doing very well under the values and economy brought in by the Western invaders, but the rest of the country got nothing, and there you go. The result is in the record.
Exact same deal in Afghanistan. The Brits invaded, set up a nice table filled with gravy for those in Kabul who cooperated. And a nice little outpost of somewhat Western culture developed in Kabul, complete with cricket and university. And lots of good folks grew up in that nice enclave, adopted the hybrid values of that enclave, and prospered. But the rest of the country got nothing, had no reason adopt anything from the invaders or their invader values.
Well, a lot of stuff happened between the Brits and us, but when we did end up in Afghanistan, it was the same deal. Kabul got lots and lots of money and the hybrid-western values left over from the Brits invasion re-kindled nicely. Cricket, university, movies, and money, money, money. Pretty darn good deal for the people of Kabul. But nothing for anyone else. Just trouble and yet another bunch of invading assholes with foreign asshole values to get rid of.
There was no support for whatever we were trying to do in (South) Vietnam outside of those in Saigon who had adopted to and benefited through our presence. And there was no support for whatever we were trying to do in Afghanistan outside of those in Kabul who had adopted to and benefited through our presence.
Imposed good is still something imposed. And if it only benefits a few and not the many, oh boy, we know that tale. Might not have learned it, but we know it.

And here's the next unspoken question: How many Afghanie people that helpd us while we were over there are going to be given visas to leave the country? How many will we let into the US? Some of these people are in for a WORLD of hurt otherwise.
