I took a pause from the SoundHole for a bit. Too much craziness in the world, and the discussions here were not conducive to a more peaceful state of mind. But there are good discussions here, and I have learned about so many different artists and kinds of music in here, I couldn’t stay away forever. So what did I do with my vacation? I have been using a couple of different DAWs on my iPad for years for recording. Very full featured, but far too fragile, and I ended up dreading the process. Bought a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro X, and it’s so blissfully stable, with some additional bells and whistles that make recording easier and more enjoyable. I have been spending several hours a day the last few weeks reading, watching youtube videos and mucking with Logic. I have been playing Summertime, the old Gershwin number, for several years. As part of my guitar studies, it was a song I chose to learn how to improvise around a melody. When I started to play at my jam, I started to play it there. I had started to record a version of it on the iPad, and I transferred that over to the MacBook and imported it into Logic. I then added on a few more tracks, and mixed it down. This is me playing everything, rhythm and lead guitar, bass and drums, and singing lead and harmony. Drums are a cajon for bass and snare, and then an Alesis pad to play the crash and ride cymbals using some of the kit sounds that come with Logic. Photos are all mine, mostly from around here, though there is one of the Mississippi river in Iowa, taken from a park in the Driftless area, where there are a number of old Indian mounds. Hope you enjoy.

Very nice ! Logic is a top notch DAW software. I know a guy that is a power user. He engineers and records albums for his band and many others on a Mac using Logic. It's powerful.
What are you using for a mic and/or digital interface. We've been chatting about that on another thread.

... Bought a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro X, ... ::envy::I should mention that it’s a 5 year old MacBook. The one I use for the bit of work I do is provided by my old company, and it’s a 2011, still going strong. The architecture hasn’t changed much in years. I got an i5, (there. were a few different chips used, for various reasons, some of which were low power consumption, low processing power,) but it’s not that different speed wise, 2.7 ghz, from what they sell now, and it’s an SSD. So it was half the price of a new one, a refurb. They’re solid hardware. Logic is ony $200 US, the MacBook was $1200 Canuck, which is under a grand US. 250 gig SSD, 8 gig of memory.

What are you using for a mic and/or digital interface. We've been chatting about that on another thread. Pro Tools is the king of the hill, as far as the number of pro studios using it, and Hollywood runs on it for all the audio in shows. But Logic is a close second as far as popularity, and as far as what it does, you’ll get arguments forever of course. Somewhat like Gibson vs. Martin. I’m using an IK Multimedia iRig Pro Duo for an interface, and I have two mics, an Audio Technica AT2020, and a 12 Gauge Microhones 12g50. None of it is that expensive. I need to get some mic preamps, as I’m not getting enough gain, resulting in some unwanted hiss. There are some good cheap ones out there that do the job. With two mics, I can do a crossing pattern at the 12th fret on my guitar, and I’m really happy with the tone. I wouldn’t mind picking up some better stuff. With the interface, digital audio is digital audio, and the converters are a well known commodity now, so the quality of sound going through them is pretty much the same. It’s just whether or not the rest of the package is sufficient. IMNSHO.

Nice work, Rick! Killer hot lick at the end.. My wife said, why did you do the show off part at the end? I thought about explaining about being a teenage boy in the early 70s, watching and listening to the guitar gods, ending songs with burning licks, and here was an opportunity to do one after 50 years of playing.... and I just left it. A fella’s gotta do what a fella’s gotta do..

The cost of Pro Tools vs Logic is quite a jump. As they said in the article, as far as functionality goes, both do pretty much everything you need. Hell, Auria on the iPad did everything I needed. I just needed more stability and better support.

Yes, Pro Tools can get spendy—at up to $999.00 per year—but it seems as though the free version (full functionality, less capacity) might be enough to accomplish your project. Not trying to sell Pro Tools, Logic Pro is great and your use of it is exemplary. I’m just guessing that the “free forever” level of Pro Tools might handle what most of us might want to do.

It does look interesting. Definitely some restrictions in there, but lots of functionality. Didn’t realize they had a free version. Apple just come out with a free trial for Logic, they’ve never done that before.

Really nice, Rick. I do think a little trombone would add some nice frosting to the breaks, but, other than that, as I said, really nice!

Even more basic than the ones on the iPad, Alan. You can do the basics for sure, and do good recordings. But a lot of the editing is destructive, and it doesn’t have the bells and whistles and gorgeous plugins that the big boys do.

It has its uses and I’ve used it for some things. But for real music production on a budget, at least try the “free forever” level of Pro Tools. If you decide to get Logic Pro later, most of what you learned will still apply.
