Thile is the best mando player extant, but he may be even a better singer.

Melancholy and sweet.
I don't know if Thile is the best mando player ever. But he is the most versatile of anyone I've heard. A truly creative individual.
And, yes he has a smooth lovely toned voice. Just draws you in with it's casual ease and richness and clarity. All the new age singers out there could do well to listen to Thile. He communicates.

He is an amazing musician. Player, composer, singer, arranger. I can’t believe the breadth and quality of material he was producing every week on live from here. He obviously had help and lots of talented guests, but his was the mind. It would seem from watching him that he can sight read at speed as well. Chris Eldridge seems to be cut from the same cloth. Love listening and watching.

Listen to the Thile Bach piece at 8:29 and tell me he ain't the greatest. He plays classical, jazz, bluegrass and Americana all with similar skill and elan. I remember hearing that Yoyo Ma's parts had to be written out for him to read in the Goat Rodeo as he did not have the improvisational skills of Thile or Eldridge. The breadth or Thile's skill is beyond my comprehension. Again listen at 12:30. The whole presto movement is at speed. I would not rant like this about any other pop or Americana musician that I am aware of.

I love Stiernberg. And if the question was "Whose albums would you buy?", well, the proof is in the pudding. I've bought several Stiernberg albums and not a single Thile album. I like the music Stiernberg plays.
But if you staged it as an athletic contest, I would bet and probably not lose that anything Stiernberg could play, Thile could duplicate, on the spot in real time. And the reverse would not be true.

OK, OK, OK. I surrender. Thile may be the greatest musician of our time. So accomplished. So versatile.
I make my own silly videos in the kitchen most weeks. It takes me SEVERAL takes to get though a song that is about 10% as complex as the Bach piece and 25% as long.

Theile is simply great, in all genres.
Here is a nice little clip of Don, with Brian Oberlin and Evan Marshall. All three are pretty darn good. I saw them in concert and was amazed. I took lessons from Brian for 6 months, but he left Oregon before any of his talent rubbed off on me! He still does a mandolin camp (pre-covid) nearby.
