Here’s my fearful assessment of the current situation.
All that matters are the swing states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Florida. Those are the only major ones in play. And they have been leaning Democratic. WI & MI have D governors. Florida was close. But the Ds may have peaked too early. The Pandemic is throwing the whole nation for a loop. And reaction against lockdowns are building. WI & FL are open. MI is chomping at the bit. So, these states are going to be the Petri dish for the pandemic and all the stay-at-home politics. So much so, that if people DON’T get sick in those states in large numbers, then the Ds will be seen as overreacting and will loose the 2020 election !
Now, I don’t want to see people get sick and die. But if that doesn’t happen in significant numbers in those “open” states, then Trump is in.
The nation doesn’t like Trump. If the Ds would have put up a fresh face as a candidate, they could weather this storm. The country most often votes for a fresh face, if one is presented to them. Biden is NOT a fresh face. He’s very Hillary like, in that he’s an old school, everything-is-fine, establishment candidate. The country rarely votes one of them in. We all (whatever political persuasion) dislike the Washington establishment. The big change in the politics of the country will have to wait for 2024. That’s when all the old farts will be too old to run. Both parties will have to turn over the reigns to a younger generation.
Mask on, mask off.

" The nation doesn’t like Trump"
There's your problem right there. You've been listening to the wrong sources. Trump haters don't like Trump. Trump supporters don't answer surveys.

I remember driving through the country side here just before the election where Trump won the election. I was shocked to see the number of Trump lawn signs and the absolute absence of Clinton signs. That's when a foreboding of the dark Trump cloud hit me.

I have no idea what will happen. My only prediction is that come November, the economy and the virus--which are really the same issue--will be voters' chief concern.

Instead of the Democrats and their press seeing and acknowledging how hermetically sealed their world view -- their narrative -- resides ONLY within their closed, gated community and trying to correct that -- see what others besides themselves believe -- instead, they simply looked for potential leaks in their almost air tight seal and plugged them. So now social media is being censored to protect them....and it will end up having exactly the opposite effect. The Democrats may get their wish of a totally collapsed economy into which they can ride with their Socialist cavalry and save the day. I hope not, but they do have two ways to win now -- LOTS of COVID deaths (yay!!!) or a totally collapsed economy (yay!!!! again). Otherwise, I suspect Trump may win again.

I hope it was exaggerated and everything goes back to normal quickly. I tend to doubt that but I would like it to be true. I know 7 people whose lives were made hell by Covid-19. One died shortly after I mentioned her here and one of the regulars posted “Is she dead yet.” So, yes, she is. 5 are in various stages of recovery and one, who spent 31 days on a ventilator is now on oxygen and dialysis, likely for life, and is in acute rehab learning how to swallow again. Walking is still a long way off. So, yeah, I hope it is all some vast socialist/evil reporter conspiracy but I tend to think it is a highly contagious disease that has still not run its course.

Both parties will have to turn over the reigns to a younger generation. There will be a new crop of old farts in 2024. There is a system is place. When one crop of old farts gasses out, a new crop of old farts comes along to take their place. The system auto-replenishes itself. It's a pretty amazing deal. It is set up to never run out of old farts, old farts all the way down.

Given the battleground states, it might come down to Biden's VP pick. If he wants to win, pick Amy (or my wild-card of the impossible odds).

Instead of the Democrats and their press seeing and acknowledging how hermetically sealed their world view -- their narrative -- resides ONLY within their closed, gated community Oh my. Here we go again. If anything, there are two gated communities in this political world. Fox News being the center of the counter community. ( "Fair and Balanced" - bullshit). And also neither one of them totally suits the needs of the majority of the populace. That's why there are swing states - places where the political divide is close enough that they can flip or flop either direction when one side or the other takes their agenda too far. And I can't believe for a second that Democrats want to see the total collapse of the economy. I'm not saying their policies are all correct for the country. But it's not an evil conspiracy. No more so than the right's agenda. I believe that the great majority of people in this country vote by holding their nose and pressing the lever for the person that stinks the least. Neither gated narrative really fits the majority. As a midlander that saddens me greatly.

But it's not an evil conspiracy. I'm not even hinting that it is. I never have. I never will. It is not a conspiracy. It never was and it never had to be.

there are two gated communities in this political world. Fox News being the center of the counter community. I think you are right and wrong. And the fact that you fall back on the FOX trope is an indication of one way that you are wrong. And, yes, there are two polarized world views that are both self-sustaining or even circular in the reasoning that supports them. But they are not symmetrical. As evidenced by your FOX comment, you demonstrate just how asymmetrical it is. The right lives in the world of the left and cannot help but be more aware of how it thinks. If the left wants to know how the right thinks, it has to seek it out (hint: It's neither FOX, nor is it "I'm very balanced. I watch PBS and so I hear David Brooks almost every night.") Beyond that, the fact that you can't understand my point of view beyond a notion that I believe in conspiracy theories demonstrates just how impenetrable is the left's narrative.

I'm not going to say a lot because I have learned with close family members (and several here) that there are certain topics that I have to avoid discussing in depth in order to maintain a warm personal relationship.
All I want to add is that between now and November, in spite of the pandemic, there will be more documents pried out of the hands of those who are loathe to let them go. And there is a good chance that there will also be hearings and (fingers crossed) indictments.
The chickens are beginning to roost and the fallout from that and how it will influence those swing voters will need to be taken into account.
