In the 70's one of the landmark albums by Yes was Close to the Edge. Similar to Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull and others, not many musicians jumped on the bandwagon to play the extended pieces that these musicians wrote and performed. I was digging around YouTube yesterday and stumbled upon this and was impressed that they tacked this piece, or as my violin teacher told me many time. "Play the piece, but never let the piece play you !"
The original version by Yes

Close to the Edge is probably my favorite album, ever. My sister bought an 8 track tape player, that I inherited, and she had the album. I was more of a folk and rock kind of guy, but I listened, found some parts I liked, and kept listening, and listening.
So much good stuff. I’m an old bass player, and Chris Squire’s work on the album is stunning. The tone, and the musicality. And Steve Howe is possibly my favorite guitar player, ever. For an album that old, I still spin it, several times a year.
The intro to Siberian Khatru, where it transitions to the verse.... has to be played at high volume. And that’s only the start of what I love about the album. Will give this a listen, Gene. Thanks.

Wow. That was spectacular. I can say that that was pretty well note for note, beat for beat. Absolutely amazing.
You also realize just how high Jon Anderson sang, listening to her hit the notes.

Well, that was a rabbit hole. They also just did an amazing distributed version of Roundabout, a version of South Side of the Sky from a couple of years ago, and did an absolutely killer version of Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas. The bass player in Close to the Edge is driving force, Ritchie Castellano, and that’s his wife singing.

I used to love Yes. Today, it is not my cup of tea but tackling that takes some dedicated listening & playing.

Love Yes. Love Tull. Can’t stand ELP. Mike Didn’t like them nearly as much, though Brain Salad Surgery got a lot of spins. Genesis, loved them - Selling England By the Pound.

This might be more familiar. It’s certainly shorter.

This might be more familiar. It’s certainly shorter. Much more listenable than close to the edge. Phew.

"And You And I" is one of my favorite Yes tunes. Very good memories tied up in that one. "Close to the Edge" is a more difficult song for me to get into, but I like both it and "Siberian Khatru."
Of course, I like Yes' Union album, and the purists don't. Ah, well.

I feel about this piece of 'music' about the same way Peter feels about liberals, or even centrists. Urhk.

I feel about this piece of 'music' about the same way Peter feels about liberals, or even centrists. Urhk. Lol, Alan. How much did you actually listen to? It’s a long, complicated piece of music with multiple parts. It’s more a piece of classical music than pop, folk, or rock. But if it’s not your cup of tea, it’s not. To be honest, I’m always amazed at how many people love this album. It took me a long time to warm up to it.

At least I didn’t post Tales from Topographic Oceans This for me, is one of the prettiest songs members of the band ever did collaboratively. And then when Steve Howe released a solo album

Hmmm, either a Kohno or Sakurai on that last clip. Not bad for a "rocker".

Many Yes fans dismiss the Union album. I think this is great.

I loved part of "The Ancient:" It is probably what started my interest in classical guitar.
