DAYUM!! it was awesome and everybody went ga ga. Feeds 8. If you don't already have this recipe in your quiver you need it. So easy. So good. INGREDIENTS 1⁄2 cup Old Bay Seasoning 2 tablespoons salt 4 quarts water 1(12 ounce) can beer 8 cloves garlic 8 medium red potatoes, cut in quarters 2 large vidalia onions, cut in wedges 2 lbs smoked andouille sausage, cut in 2 inch lengths 8 ears fresh corn on the cob chopped in to 2'3" chunks 4 lbs large shrimp, in shells In an 8-quart stock pot, bring Old Bay, salt, water and beer to a boil. Add garlic cloves, potatoes and onions; cook over high heat for 8 minutes. Add spiced sausage; continue to cook on high for 5 minutes. Add corn cobs to pot; continue to boil for 7 minutes. Add shrimp in shells, cook for 4 minutes. Drain cooking liquid; pour contents of pot into several large bowl or shallow pails or dump out on a bunch of newspaper Sprinkle with additional Old Bay.

Looks awesome. If only I could adapt the recipe to be seafood-free, as much of my family is allergic. But that sort of defeats the whole purpose, doesn't it?

All of that fits into an 8-quart stock pot? I'll be damned.

All of that fits into an 8-quart stock pot? It doesn't seem right, does it? I'd have thought it would take at least a 2 gallon stock pot.

We actually used a propane turkey fryer with one of those drop in baskets and boiled it up outside. The 8 quart pot thing was copied from the recipe but yeah I think it would fit.

I feel like such a total southern cooking rube. Most of the attendees were relocated Californians and it was new cuisine to most of us which made it fun. I have vague childhood memories of standing next to a pile of boiled crawdads in Alabama somewhere that was as tall as I was. I had hushpuppies once, and have had fried okra at the Sunday after church supper or dinner or lunch or whatever the hell you call it down there.

Except for the Old Bay. Sub in Zat's crab boil and you're there. Looks like a crawfish boil.

Relocated Californians? You associate with relocated Californians? Aren't they the new "Pariahs of the West"?
Back to food. I could put 20 or 30 pounds on you in no time. We would hit a few local catfish places, eat some fried pickles, oysters, fish fillets, & hush puppies all washed down with way-too-sweet tea. Next day go to any number of local restaurants or gas stations even for a foot long shrimp po-boy (or maybe a soft shell crab if they have them). Then go to Copelands for crawfish tails in their special sauce sopping it up with slices of toasted french bread. Then a crawfish boil or two.
We haven't even started on the numerous varieties of gumbo. I gained a pound just typing this.

Seems like a terrible waste of a perfectly good newspaper to me.

Also - as you can see we used small whole red potatoes rather than quartering larger ones. I think that is an improvement
