Way back when I was in Community College I played in the school jazz band (never studied music, just played it). Anyways toward the end of my 4 year commitment (1983), the very old guy who taught it died. The guy who replaced him started a policy that if you were ever a student, you could take the jazz band class without actually being enrolled in the school any more (tended to encourage ringers so all the seats were always full).
So 3 years after that (1987) I graduated with my Bachelors, got married, pretty much quit music, and got a real job. But I went back to CC and the jazz band.
So forward 2 years and I had started to work at Ford and the jazz band was invited to play at Carnegie Hall. I was one of two married people in the band at the time so the wife went with me to NYC and we had a blast. Stayed in the legendary Penna hotel (Pennsylvania 6-5000), ate really expensive deli sandwiches at some lengendary deli tourist trap, partying on some tour boat in the harbor, and of course, playing a concert in Carnegie Hall.
So forward again to 2000 and we'd moved to Virginia (with kids now) and I'm sent to Diamond Bar, CA for some regulatory work with CARB and I made it a point to visit my buddy Chris who was now living in Hermosa Beach. While there he surprised me with a picture that someone had taken of all of us playing Carnegie Hall.
Forward again to a couple weeks ago and my wife (same one) is getting out some old photos we've had in storage for a while and found that picture. Now it's starting to be stuck to the glass in the frame so she contacts Chris to see if he can get another copy. Today he sent me the digital file so now I can share it (sorry I can't correct the orientation at the moment).
That's the big picture. He also sent me the close up that's been hanging on the walls of our various residences of ours.
That's Chris- the middle trombone, Kevin- the trumpet on the right, and Rich- the trumpet next to him.
Now I know the community college jazz band isn't Miles Davis, but how many folks have you ever run into that has played Carnegie F'in' Hall?
