What I've heard is that it is indeed true as a number of serious proposals in a number of these rioting cities. I believe one of those serious proposals has actually been voted on and defeated (not sure it was in Minneapolis). The pattern of this violence has proven to be fairly directly aligned with a certain distinct political structure.

If it's true, it's a very bad idea.

By the way, I posted about it Thursday and Bill laughed at it. Now the city council in Minneapolis are working on getting rid of the police. Seriously. Yep, now's the time to get the hell out. While you still have a chance. I guess Terry not really getting it is a step in the right direction.

Bill—shop talk! I see an extraneous comma in this sentence, from the article to which Terry linked.
"While Minneapolis has debated the issue in the past, Floyd's death at the hands of Minneapolis police, has added a sense of urgency, and the calls for police departments to be disbanded have echoed in other cities around the country."

It's a long way from here to Tipperary. Here equals Here and Tipperary equals a Mpls without a police force.
I expect it takes a long time to disband a police force. There are contracts and lawsuits connected with contracts. And given time, lots of things can happen.
Maybe the disbanding threat becomes a bargaining chip to get rid of the hated police union boss and few other things on the reform wish list.
And given time, new elections will held... elections that could change the makeup of the current council, especially when emotions settle and voters contemplate living and conducting business in a city that is on track to have every insurance rate quadruple while property tax and sales tax receipts plummet as businesses get the hell out of Dodge.
It is a feel good moment that probably will result in an overhauled police department (on bicycles) under entirely new management with a long gone union boss.
Or, maybe the city business sector will vamoose and Fargo will be able to steal the Vikings and Twins.
Whatever. my guess is it will be less of deal than many might be currently expecting.
It would be nice having the Vikings and Twins in Fargo.

It all depends on what they mean. From CNN:
"Pressed for details on what the dismantling might look like, [Council President] Bender told CNN she was looking to shift police funding toward community-based strategies and that the city council would discuss how to replace the current police department.
"'The idea of having no police department is certainly not in the short term,'" she added.
"Bender and other council members analyzed the nature of 911 calls by constituents, she said, and found most were for mental health services, health and EMT and fire services.
"The nine council members made the announcement at a community rally in Minneapolis. News of the announcement was first reported by The Appeal.
"Calls by some to defund or outright abolish police departments have grown in the wake of Floyd's death and nationwide protests against police brutality.
"City council members had previously said they would take steps to dismantle the police department, including Bender, who tweeted earlier this week, 'Yes. We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a transformative new model of public safety.'
...
"Jeremiah Ellison, city councilman for Ward 5, tweeted a similar message Thursday, writing, 'We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department. And when we're done, we're not simply gonna glue it back together. We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response.'
"Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was booed by protesters Saturday night when he refused to commit to defunding and abolishing the city's police force. A spokesperson for the mayor said in a statement that he is 'unwavering in his commitment to working with Chief (Medaria) Arradondo toward deep structural reforms and uprooting systemic racism.'"

I’ve certainly been vocal enough around here with my opinion on the need to reform the MPD. I sincerely hope that the council is up to the task.

If, indeed the Council wants to replace the current policing and emergency service model, they should do some heavy research, hire some experts, and launch a study on a new model for Emergency Services Departments. Examine alternate approaches. Come up with a proposal and a time line. Go through public debate/discussion/input on the subject. Then announce and start a pilot program.
Duh ? ! ? !

Baby Dottir has very much bought into the latest group think and was pointing out the various incidents that have been dominating the news as the underpinning for the protests, riots, making over the PD's, etc. I told her we do not agree on the either the justification or the "remedy". I also told her that when she gets to be my age and most of the cities in America are dangerous, hollowed out shells to remember that her dad told her this was going to be the result of her getting what she wants now. Just my $0.02.

I also told her that when she gets to be my age and most of the cities in America are dangerous, hollowed out shells to remember that her dad told her this was going to be the result of her getting what she wants now. Just my $0.02. My kids are much the same way, although now that my daughter is older and has a real redneck ex-military badass fiance and a quasi-police job, she's rapidly becoming more realistic. I tell them that when we brought them to Virginia they were the same age as when my parents took us to Detroit which has always been a gutted hell hole dominated by crazy ass mayors (largely black) for life. These folks that are pushing so hard to go that way will meet a predictable fate. Next up will be the outright fleeing of anyone who can scrape together two nickels to get the hell out which will be followed by the complete cratering of the tax base and from there an empty shell of a city occupied primarily by squatters and those that can't leave. Eventually they'll start shrinking the practical boundaries of the city creating a massive, lawless borderland where anything goes. Including burning abandoned buildings for sport. Y'all write this down. It'll happen. My wife in the meantime is really worried about Antifa threats to move out to places like where we live now. All 4500 of us. Part of our music career has involved playing in wineries and such out in these gorgeous hills of Virginia and West Virginia. We were privy to the informal militia meetings where they discussed what happens when DC obliterates itself. Unfortunately for the city folk, they have no capacity to be self sufficient. If commerce stops moving for whatever reason, they've got approximately 24 hours or so of vital provisions in house. You want to see what real rioting looks like? Start starving. Now I'm absolutely sure that the folks out here will be more than happy to help in any way practical. It's what we do. But 70 miles is a long way to walk to come steal from us. And we've got guns. Lots of them. No, not real worried about those dipshits. It's their funeral.
