Think you can guess?
"Objective, rational linear thinking"
"Cause and effect relationships"
"Quantitative emphasis"
"Hard work is the key to success"
"Work before play"
"Respect authority"
"Plan for the future"
"Delayed gratification"

Things your grandfather said? Well, they are that. They are also things my grandsons' grandfather says. But that's not it.

How "fragile" of you. (Oops...that was a hint.)

I'm not fragile, I'm ignoring being poked at. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a shit.

Lyrics from songs off the fourth studio album by the progressive rock group Yes. Curiously and somewhat ironically close.

(when I first heard this concept, I was a young teen. It stunned me to think that people thought this was true. I remain stunned to this day.)

That these were something other than common grace, or natural law.

God it sucks to be white. And male. And heterosexual. And married. And religious (nominally anyways). Guess I'll need to drain another bottle or two of wine tonight to drown my shame.

This "whitey" deal does not bother me anywhere nearly as much as the concomitant implication that the opposite of those traits would imply cultures other than the oat milk latte and gluten free crowd. That's some fucked up stuff, right there. I can certainly get behind many of the other concepts talked about in the linked essay--it might surprise some here to find out that my mother was decidedly non-white, and the term "institutional racism" was coined in a book co-authored by my uncle-in-law on my mom's side (the one from Columbia U, not Trinidad), but the idea that work ethic, competition, or self-reliance is "white" or conversely, that "white" means you believe, for example, that a wife is supposed to be a subservient homemaker is nuts. What sort of asshole would think up and promulgate such a thing?

God it sucks to be white.... What sucks is having an institutional culture now fully invested in racist thinking. It's easy to be dismissive, but we can't underestimate the extent to which this insanity is prevalent. Have you read Robin DiAngelo's book? She is heavily referenced in the Smithsonian page. One of our local school boards has even made her book required reading for administrators. When I read it, I came away shocked at how she is so openly and apologetically racist. It's all projection. There's even a chapter where she talks about being afraid of black people, so her answer is to blame it on her "white fragility" and then goes on to project her own dysfunction on all white people. This is all insane, cult level stuff. It would be worthy of nothing at all, except it has been injected into virtually every institution (public and private) of society at this point. And it's just nuts. You're white? You try not to be racist? Ordinarily, that would be good, but according to DiAngelo and the Critical Race Theory all this is based on, trying to not be racist is just about the most racist thing a white person can do. The only thing that gives me cheer amidst all this ridiculousness is the skill with which this guy skewers the whole project:
