I am not sure about the date and I don’t feel like closing this page to look. Whatever it is, it’s raining. Since it was 234 degrees in the shade yesterday, that may cool it down to 150 or so.
Any of you guys still play guitar or have you abandoned that to fight and threaten each other? Maybe someone is using some time to be a better guitarist? Ok, that made me laugh, too.

The marine layer this morning is redolent with the 'shore smell' of salt water and rotting seaweed.
Better days y'all

Barb and I were supposed to be in Vancouver, BC right now and then the next two weeks in Alaska. Needless to say, it ain’t a gonna happen. Well, Lake Michigan and the National Lakeshore is still there and we can pretend raccoons are bears.

I love that smell.
Good morning, everyone.
Our original vacation plans for this year were also tossed. In a week we'll spend a week at a little cabin in the mountains we've rented. It's two hours away and we can maintain our distance just as well there as here, and in a lot cooler temperatures.
Enjoy your day.

Got a IM last night from my cousin asking if I'd like to have about a hundred pounds of fine, central Oregon obsidian. Looks like there will be some flint (obsidian) knapping in my future. I think my next project will be to make several tomahawks or maybe war axes.

Rendolent.
Speaking of spoiled plans, no camping for us this summer. No trip to the desert condo in Oct. not trip to the islands in Dec.
But to LJs query, while I’m not sure I’d lay claim to being a better guitarist, I am having fun with movable chord shapes and weird voicings. And the new barbecue is putting out some good food. Got baby backs defrosting and soon will get a dry rub (anazingribsdotcom. Memphis Dust) then about four hours at 200 degrees. Tomorrow.

I don't have a pool to maintain but we did receive our skimmer from Amazon yesterday, it works great to clean up the bugs and cottonwood fluff that settles on the water in the greenhouse tank.
My usual this morning, three scrambled eggs. A little something different, added some Zatarain's Blackened Seasoning, liked it a lot. Perhaps a small life lesson buried in there.
Guitar playing really slowed down during my recent project, truly enjoying picking it up again. Got a Martin 00-17 Authentic this spring and have come to really like the 1 7/8 nut and the all hog sound.
Cheers

I have been going through Mike Dowling’s Swing Guitar lessons. I did so years ago but I dug it out again to reacquaint myself. He uses 3 note chords for the most part & I really love them. Interesting moveable shapes that, I find, can work well with a flat pick or finger style. Interesting stuff presented by a fantastic guitarist.

What would you suggest as a starting point? I have a DVD of his called Swing Guitar:Rhythm’s Where it’s At. It is from Homespun Tapes. Dowling has other things out, too. You might see if some of his lessons are on YouTube to get a feel for what he does. Whit Smith, from Hot Club of Cowtown, has lots of videos up that I find interesting. Some are easier than others, but he does a lot of similar chord work, gets into substitutions and things like that. Nice thing about YouTube is that you can slow it down to more easily catch things. Whit tends to jump around in his discussion so playing things at 1/2 speed can help. During this pandemic stay at home train wreck we are on, that’s one way I have been keeping the fingers & brain nimble. Well, the fingers, anyway.

No rain here, but it is cloudy, which made for a pleasant walk this morning. I've been playing guitar almost daily. Also relearned the soprano recorder and am working through some beginning keyboard books. Music is keeping me occupied and sane.
Over on the cruise discussion forum, among all of the complaining, people are posting pictures of their gardens. Yes, we were supposed to be on a cruise last month. Were also supposed to go to grandson's high school graduation. Were supposed to visit friends and family in Phoenix. And on and on. My traveling now consists of varying the route for our daily walk and visiting different rooms in the house.

Good afternoon.
DaWife let me go grocery shopping with her, she has a problem with her right shoulder so she needs someone to help. I got to push the cart and reach for things. Now I'm tired and thinking nap but I'll have a sit down and then decide.
Getting to the grocery store means driving right by one of our favorite breakfast places, The Little Oven. They were open so we dropped in for breakfast. You need reservations even for breakfast but they had a no show so they gave us a table. Been a long time, love that place.
Yesterday was a miserable day of heat and humidity, Simon kitty loved it and REFUSED to come in the air conditioned house.
Pine Island 93F.
I'll have to tell Bill about the Little Oven, he's probably on one of his Sunday drives.

The thing I like about the Dowling series is the degree to which he simplifies it. He dumbs it down without making me feel dumb. I'm reminded of the Joel Mabus lesson I took in which he gave me a lifetime of something to practice by simply de-mystifying the obvious and expertly confirming my sense of direction when he said, "Yes, you really do need to slow it down THAT much or you will never play it fast. Ever."

I had to wear a snorkel during my run this morning. The air was so heavy I had to go looking for it.

I am driving down to Sauk Centre today to drop off a guitar and amp that belong to one of the more amazing human beings I have know. Mel Lamar. Mel is 89 and the only thing he has ever done his whole life is to play and teach the guitar. He was a professional jazz guitarist in the Milwaukee area in the 50’s and 60’s and was often called to play when a band was needed for a famous touring jazz artist. He had a music store for a while, and also toured with various bands playing everything from jazz to country to rock to make ends meet but jazz was always his first love. After moving to our area he became a legendary teacher having taught hundreds of people to play the guitar. Mel was my teacher and I have had the honor to gig with him for the last three years or so. He has survived many health problems but about four months ago he kind of collapsed at a gig, wound up in the hospital and nursing home during which time the pandemic hit. He is now in an assisted living and it looks like his playing days are over. We have had him dead and buried a few times in the past though and he is one resilient SOB with an amazingly positive attitude so you never know 😊 When he was on his game, even at his age, his playing was a show stopper and always put a big smile on everyone’s face. He was just amazing and extremely humble about his music.

I've now sat through two sermons today. The first was during our live-streamed service, and a very good one it was. The service happened to be followed on YouTube by a rebroadcast of David Brooks giving the sermon at the National Cathedral on July 5th. Brooks is Jewish by background and his take on Jesus and our current problems was very interesting.
I don't want to hear any more sermons, however good they may be.
