I would like to have a Trader Joe's within 50 miles of my house. The closest one is a mile from my old Guitar Center up in Indy.

We're spoiled by having the Star of India six minutes away and still doing business--we call in our favorites and can pick up within a half-hour or so and have light meals for two days. Or three if we get the biryani for two dinner. And if we're tired of Indian, there's Thai from Sawatdee even closer. We miss our favorite servers, but at least we're not going to have to survive on our own cooking, which is much decayed these days.

The original was in St. Paul, and my very pregnant wife and I ate there one evening in May 1984, had this wonderful appetizer where you get lettuce or cabbage leaves, and all kinds of dry ingredients -- like raisins, sunflower seeds, sprouts, etc., plus various sauces -- and you build these leaf roll-ups. Well, some of the sauces were killer-hot, and to this day I credit that appetizer for bringing about the birth of Erica Jeanne Hammond, R.I.P., early the next day.

Our Sawatdee has been at one end of St. Cloud's saloon row for decades now, and so far it has been surviving the restaurant apocalypse, probably for some of the same reasons that Star of India, Bravo Burritos, and Bo Diddley's are hanging on: family-owned and operated, with a long-standing and loyal customer base. We've been eating at all of them since they opened, and we're not the only customers whose orders can be anticipated by the longer-serving waitstaff.
