I wish he could have sung with Steely Dan

Stapleton is amazing. But I’m not sure how he would have fit in with Becker and Fagin.

Marty, OK, capo on 3. G chord to start. What do you think he has going on here with the recording? My crappy old ears say brand new d'Addario stings, maybe a Martin D-28, medium Fender flat pick. I do not have any notion about the mics. Any thoughts?

Yup. It's a steel string guitar.

Wow - He sure is absolutely amazing. He's got it all. Such a big, warm, engaging voice. And his song writing chops are spectacular. As well as his guitar work. So simple and accessible, he draws you in. Lyrics and chords are not flashy. Kind of simple, but they flow in such smooth way that you feel like it's the first time you've ever heard anything like that. And very melodic. Rising and falling at the right places. Just the right touch of melancholy and longing, yet rich and hopeful.
I'm going to have to buy that album. And I'm going to have to work up that song. It's too perfect. (And Stapleton has a perfect male vocal range. No need for screeching). But, of course his tone is unapproachable.
Lovely video. Stripped down. Warm an cuddly. Makes you feel like you're a fly on the wall at a special moment in musical history.

Check out the extremely well-worn Gibson at 2:04.

Check out the extremely well-worn Gibson at 2:04. Ha ha. It's just a fleeting moment in that vid. He's playing a Martin dread for the most of it. But I've seen that Gibson before.

A G with a hammer-on C note (G4). Alternating with a CM7 hammer-on the same C to remove the M7. All very familiar easy shapes. But creatively strung together.

We both know that a Martin is a Martin is a Martin, but a Gibson*... well, a Gibson is a GIBSON. *(specifically, the fabulous Gibson flattops from 1930's through the 1950's, and some knockouts from the 60's like John's LG)

Incredible what a talented person can do with about 4 chords and the truth.
When I saw the song title, I thought it was going to be a cover of this:

... I do not have any notion about the mics. Any thoughts? His engineer explains mics and overall setup... He explained the placing. And he called out the east German (faux Neumann) on the guitar. But I didn’t hear him call out the main vocal mic. It’s got ro be a thrill for an engineer to work with somebody like Stapleton.

I see the RCA 77 is a $1,700 mic. The vocal looks like a big body. I saw a fancy studio mic like that once that had 2 large diameter elements and was a $5000 item.

I'm pretty sure that's Dave Cobb's studio. I'm sure he has no shortage of expensive equipment if that's what it takes to get the job done right.
