I've added two new EPs, each with six songs, to my website for your listening pleasure. Or displeasure. Whatever. You can listen for free so all it costs is time. It's just me and my J-35 or Farida OT-22. "Murder Ballads of the Texas Panhandle" is just what it says -- six murder ballads I wrote that take place in the Texas Panhandle. (Technically, one takes place in the Oklahoma Panhandle, but the victim was from Texas....) Some of the stories are true, some I made up and some mix fact and fiction. I recorded them in an actual studio here in Nicosia with fancy mics and everything. Here they are: davidhannersmusic.com/new-ep/"Postcard" is a simpler affair. It was a writing/editing exercise, and the concept was each song had to be 100 words long. Not 99, not 101, but 100 on the nose. Like what you could maybe fit on a postcard if you wrote small. I recorded them on my iPad at our dining room table, then sent them to Don Arney of Quantum Productions in Terre Haute (Don mixed and mastered my last real CD) to try and make them listenable. Here they are: davidhannersmusic.com/postcards-2/Thanks, and have a great Thanksgiving. Be careful out there.

I'm listening right now and enjoying these songs, David. Also imagining Ryland P. Cooder playing some leads and fills.

I would've liked to have added someone on leads or harmonies, but between the pandemic, time and my own limited budget, it just didn't happen. Plus, I've not yet gotten out enough to hear an acoustic lead guitarist in Cyprus who gets Americana. I did a gig with a great violin player (he plays with the national symphony and has his own quartet) and while he was a fantastic musician, he didn't yet have a feel for Americana, if that makes any sense.

The beauty of recording technology these days is that you can send a copy to someone and they can lay down a track for you, and pass it around until you have a fully fleshed-out production.
I apologize, but seem to have lost Ry's phone number.

How dare you post music on a political discussion argument board!

Ryland schmyland. Who needs Cooder when you access to Cosmic Wonder? You are looking for atonal, disjointed, time challenged fills, right?

So far I like "Leaving Joliet" best. "A Cautionary Tale" too. I'm still too partial to the way you used to do "Guymon" back 15 years ago in Bill's basement.

"Guymon" is one of those songs I have a love-hate relationship with. Parts of it I like, and parts of it I don't. For this version, I dropped the verse about Tammy going to Amarillo (originally Fort Worth) and seducing Irv's father in exchange for a used pickup. I think I did it because I was getting concerned about introducing another character and even more moving parts, but in retrospect, I think it was a mistake to omit it. Sometimes, my concern over brevity calls the shots when it shouldn't. I do, however, like the new verse about the sheriff bringing Tammy in for questioning. The song, for those interested, is a retelling of Genesis 38, the story of Tamar and Judah....

Hey, Dave, any time you want a lead or bass track, let me know. I have fun laying that stuff down. I collaborate with a friend on Vancouver Island and one in Alberta, by just loading a mix passed via Dropbox from whomever put the basics down into a track in Logic, recording, then sending the .wav or .aif file of the new track back. And I’m cheap, as in, free, And if you don’t like it, you can throw it away.
