Wow. That looks like an amazing place. You're lucky you didn't tell us where it was ahead of time. We would have all showed up. Very enticing pictures, Evan.

I first saw Grand Lake in the mid 70's when Bruce and I hitchhiked there together to work for about a month for a custom log home builder as grunts. Several years later Bruce moved there and went to work for that builder. Bruce is my friend that built the house above. He married Pearl, whom he met when backpacking around Banff/Lake Louise. They are two of a kind when it comes to living life in the great outdoors, and they have the discipline to pull it off well. They've always has modest income from Bruce's handyman business and pearl's on-again off-again waitressing. But Bruce patiently built their houses out of pocket and they're very thrifty and thus have no debt. B.C. (uh, Before Children), they rented their first house for a year, took their bikes and gear and spent the year bicycling around Australia, New Zealand, Fiji & Tahiti. Having kids hasn't stopped them: they just put them intrailers and go. They've done 3-4 month trips with them to Scotland and to the south of France among many other outings. Amazing pople. We'd have trouble understanding why they deign to visit us on occasion were it not for the love we share.
Grand Lake is lovely and for that reason attracts many people who see it and say "man, if I could just start over here, I'd do right". Naturally, they bring their problems with them. And making a living there is no piece of cake. I think true paradise, at least for now, can only be found within. Meanwhile, I'll visit Bruce & Pearl as opportunity affords.
