Oh, MAN! I sure hate to see this. Don was on our list of stops if it ever becomes safe to travel again. Rest In Peace, Don. You sure earned it.

That is really sad. His career gave him enormous credibility on this forum. I loved his posts.

I am very, very sorry to hear this. He was a man like no other. He led the most fascinating life, but hung around with mortals like us. ON top of that, he was very kind (I know that). I thought I had a good day today. I guess now I haven't. Don will be missed.

"I thought I had a good day today. I guess now I haven't." He wouldn't want you to feel that way.

I am totally dumbstruck -- I'd sent Don a PM a couple of months ago, asking if he was OK, as we hadn't seen him post in quite a while, but I never heard back.
Talk about a Renaissance Man! Great writer, reporter, traveler, seaman, political analyst, you name it -- don't miss the video embedded in the obit.
Around 2006, I did a road trip to NC to see the girls and arranged a return trip with gigs and overnights through Virginia and PA and DC, aided by a few Soundholians, including Don, who put me up for two nights in his amazing restored B&B and would not allow me to pay him, so I played guitar at the huge dining room table as we supped with various DC journalists and others, some of whom Don had invited because of their MN connections, so thoughtful. A weekend I will never forget.
I still have his phone number in my steampunk cellphone, sigh.
Following seas, Don Smith.

He accomplished more in his life than most can even imagine. His obituary is really an amazing read.
