I think Marshall might have been the one with the spray paint.

The best thing to do with that guitar is let CF Martin fix it. Let Martin put a new top on it, that's the only way to keep the value. That way it is back to perfect factory specs.
EDIT: YES I do say NO every once in a while.

Dang. Didn't this guy ever hear about masking tape even? And what kind of paint is that? Rustoleum?
My goodness. I've used nitrocellulous tobacco sunburst from Reranch exclusively for guitar tops. And I practiced on blank wood before coming near a guitar. And I did detailed masking. My goodness. It took me HOURS to get the masking delicately cut in place. Tricky stuff. But the only way to get a reasonable product.
Wow, spraying a $10,000 guitar. Really stupid.

It's just a dumb ol' Martin, who cares? Exactly! Except for the 10k part. That just hurts.

I have told this before, but many years ago a guy I knew who repaired and built instruments showed me a 50s era D-28 that a guy had sanded down to bare wood and spray painted purple using hardware spray paint. He wanted a guitar that grabbed attention when he was on stage. It sounded like a cardboard box strung with rubber bands. He brought it to the repairman to be fixed but it was beyond hope. The repairman told him to take it home and make a planter out of it.
