Jaden Lake-Kameroff has been charged with terroristic threatening in the 2nd degree, five counts of attempted assault in the 1st degree, and four counts of assault in the 3rd Degree, following the incident onboard a commercial flight between Bethel and Aniak on July 7. According to Alaska State Troopers, Lake-Kameroff was on the flight with five other passengers when he got out of his seat and took control of the yoke, causing the Cessna Caravan to nosedive. The pilot was fortunately able to retake control of the plane as the other passengers pulled Lake-Kameroff away. The 18-year-old was then subdued by the other passengers until the aircraft safely landed in Aniak. According to a sworn affidavit signed by Trooper Jason Bohac, seen by the Anchorage Daily News, the plane was about five miles from Aniak airport when Lake-Kameroff took control and attempted to crash the plane in order to end his own life. The other passengers said they "thought we were going to die," as it was nosediving to the ground, the affidavit adds. Alaska State Troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said that before he took control of the plane, the 18-year-old had asked the pilot if he could have a go at flying and "initially asked to sit in the unoccupied co-pilot seat. Both requests were denied by the pilot."

That line between trying to understand why people do drastic, stupid shit versus just wanting them to die alone, is an ever changing one for me. As I age, 18 years old seems more and more immature to me. But crap, trying to end life for others. It is too much. I just don't think that a person of 18 years can be reprogrammed to value human life. Not set in stone in my mind, but 18 years seems to be a reasonable cut off to hold the person responsible for truly stupid actions.

It is sad how mental health has been put on the back burner in the United States. From what I'm reading this guy is clearly mentally ill , and all that appears to be happening is speculation. It's time we move forward and treat mental illness like any other disease.

It appears to me that we're doing everything in our power to address mental illness. Far from ignoring it -- we're highlighting it, and even making it something like honorable and attractive -- especially to young people. And the more we deal with it as we have been, the more of it we seem to be getting.

Kind of like the war on drugs?

John, I would gently advise that in an area where you have no expertise or real knowledge it might be best to keep your opinions to yourself. Mental illness in it’s various forms is just as much a legitimate condition as diabetes, cancer, or heart disease. The stigma attached to it by society frequently results in those afflicted failing to seek treatment with sometimes tragic consequences.

Well said, Dr. Kennedy. And you are a saw bones not a primary care doc. It is close to impossible to get adequate care for my mentally ill patients in my county.

Indiana closed basically all of its state hospitals for the mentally ill. There were problems and incidents at some of the hospitals and rather than address them, a succession of governors closed the hospitals, and abandoned the patients, dumping them on the street, essentially.
Poof, no more problems with the hospitals and, they took credit for the cost savings.
Many of the mentally ill on our streets and in our neighborhoods would have been institutionalized, when we had such places.
To be fair, having visited several of Indiana's mental health hospitals, the level of care seemed to be custodial and conditions bleak. That comes back to being willing to commit resources to make a difference.

And nothing I said contradicts that You should get yourself a job as a Fox News anchor (CNN? MSNBC?). Because your innuendo is that the teenager involved could have been acting out of some desire to be cool.

Nothing cooler than mental illness. All the hip cats and kitties are doing it. It’s the in-crowd thing to do. That and nose piercing.

Isn't that different from saying "it's not being addressed"? I acknowledge the lack of care reported in Coachdoc's area, but a substantial number of criminal defendants in my area claim mental illness, through their lawyers, this (usually) with good reason. Some really are delusional and do have a prior diagnosis and were "off their meds" when they robbed the bank, beat the wife, etc. The defendants are then professionally evaluated and treated, if and as necessary, at no cost. They get this simply by asking for it. I do agree that there is that "stigma," though I suspect millennials are more non-judgmental about it than boomers. As an old guy, I would be more embarrassed to acknowledge a diagnosis of clinical depression or bipolar disorder than I would diabetes, cancer, or shingles, and I am wrong/unfair/prejudiced to be that way. But I can't help harboring the suspicion that some claims of mental illness (harder to disprove than cancer or diabetes) are meant to excuse anti-social behavior as well as explain it.

I can't imagine any way that we have put mental illness anywhere else but front and center. We are addressing it medically, philosophically, religiously, socially, and legally. In fact, we are addressing it to such a social extent that Terry felt it not just his right, but his duty to publicly scold me for having what he assumed to be a heterodox view on the subject. Only the right people are allowed to talk about, or have opinions about what we are doing in regards to mental illness, and because I'm known to vote Republican or Libertarian, I obviously lack not just the compassion and understanding, but the intelligence to be allowed an opinion on the matter. Of course mental illness isn't on a back burner.

Beyond that, it is my understanding that Terry's implication that mental illness is always and simply physiological is not what the medical community is really saying about it. What I understand is that some of -- maybe even much --mental illness is physiological. But in no way have lifestyle choices and beliefs been ruled out as the cause of mental illness. Not all mental illness is treated physiologically. There are still some behavioral approaches successfully employed.
