I’d forgotten about that version. Brilliant. As many of you know, Barb Piper and I did a lot of Eva's arrangements. I always looked for way to improve her guitar parts, Barb always looked for way to improve the vocal parts, but we soon learned there was simply no way better than to honor Eva's interpretations in their total original glory, and just put our hearts and souls into the performance of them.

This is an amazing bit of finger style jazz. Incredible arrangement, beautifully played. I think I could actually play this, there’s nothing inherently insane here. But I would take me about a year to learn it, and get it reasonably smooth enough. Well done.

From Wikipedia. I’m guessing the rendition by Irène Joachim from the French film Soleil de Nuit might be in the original key. It’s possible, though perhaps less likely, that Jo Stafford’s 1950 recording is in the original key, but who knows. On edit: Given that Irène (Ee-ri- nay) is a man’s name it seems to me that Em is more likely than Gm. Nope! Turns out Irène was a woman. Who knew? Here’s the clip from Les Portes de la Nuit. Turns out Yves Montand sings it.

Wow Bill! Was that at an IJ? Exquisite! Yeah, I'm just not sure what year, and which locale. It might have been the year the concert was held at the Iowa School for the Blind. It was terrific in any case. We should have kept a historian on staff. I’m sure Gene has the year at least.

I keep trying find the very first public release of this to nail down the original key. This one may be it but it seems like all the motion picture clip isn’t here. I’ll try to find the whole movie.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gene, for resurrecting this. In so many ways, this was the best part of my life. What year was the recording made? Love you, man. The date on the file was 2012. The place (forgive me for not remembering the name of the place) but that small cafe that made malts as you can hear in the beginning the cash register ringing up another sale. There was a special sign outside that had the performance announcement for the evening. It was a special evening with you and Barb as the performers. I drove up and recorded the event and then afterwords was treated to a wonderful evening and dinner at your abode. I drove back the following day.

I watch a lot of videos by Chris Whiteman. He does a nice version that starts on Am7. Most versions I have found start on Cm7. It usually amounts to the melody being played with single notes and the chords accenting the tune. Starting on Am7 sounds good on my acoustic flattop but on the electric, Cm7 seems to ring out nicely. Different strokes. I like playing around with different chords—m6s, maj7s, 9ths, m7b5s (or half diminished) using shell chords wherever possible. To me, its beauty is in its simplicity. The video that starts this thread is technically impressive but it kind of wears me down the farther I get into it. I am impressed by his technical talent but I couldn’t listen to a whole lot of that, not that I don’t wish I could do it.

The 2012 must have been a copy. I found the CD I made of the evening and the date on those files were September 4, 2004. So the date has changed, but not the venue.

I'm guessing the locale was the Coffee Grounds, where I hosted periodic open mics.

Makes more sense, thanks, Gene. I'm guessing the locale was the Coffee Grounds, where I hosted periodic open mics. I believe so, I honestly just cant remember. I remember the stage and where they made the drinks was off on the left. Just before the show started, they were grinding away and I thought, Oh boy, this is going to be a challenge but they didnt and the night went off quite well ! I went digging in the basement to see if I could find the original session raw files, but found the CD I had made of the evening instead. Its down there somewhere along with all the Idiot Jams. Ill have to set aside a day to find them all. The more recent stuff is on Firewire drives, but stuff from the early 2000's, that technology wasnt around so the video is still on the original tapes and I backed up the sessions on multiple DVD's that could only hold a little over 4 GB. Today's drives are in the tera bytes. I also remember, that the laptop technology back in 2004, wasnt that great so I remember bringing 2 desktop systems in addition to my audio gear, to record the evening, having the second one for backup if the first one failed.

But I would take me about a year to learn it, and get it reasonably smooth enough. Honestly, if you removed the slap rhythm and he was playing acoustically, you could tell me it was Pat Donohue and I'd believe it based on the arrangement.

Gene, your services for this group are truly appreciated. Your recordings bring back the sweetest of memories. Thank you for your kind words, but I have to admit, Im selfish. I want to keep time around for a while. One thing I was lucky enough to realize very early, on is that, the moment you always wait for, to come, is gone before you realize that it arrived. My entire life is things that I have memories of and stories to match. I do not remember all the details, but enough to bring that feeling back for a brief moment. I am a collector of time. It is the most precious of all things and a terrible thing to waste. A line from Harry Chapin I have alway liked, that kinda describes how I feel... So it is me, that thanks all of you, for allowing me to add to my collection...
