I came across a bunch of the photos I had from that cold winter day in Madison WI, Feb. 2005 when this wayward bunch came together for a special gathering. The Madison Outing[edits and corrections] And here's the Baraboo bookstore gig from 2003 Baraboo WI 2003

There is one guy I don't recognize -- who is the dude shooting a picture in one of the last images?
(And on the far left in the first image.)

Some of you have heard this story before, but the Baraboo "show" was something I set up because I was headed to that area for a weekend of skiing at two nearby hills, which I later wrote about in a Strib Travel piece, and I thought it would be fun to gather some troops. It went really well, PaulK brought his fantastic Daedalus speakers and all the rest of the P.A. gear, and I was pleasantly surprised that in the audience was my first-ever journalism professor, Dean O'Brien, who had retired to Baraboo and learned about the gig from a little item in the local paper that was based on info from the bookstore.
After the show, Paul and his charming wife, Linda, and I repaired to a cafe for wine and munchables, and in the course of conversation, I mentioned that I had been in the Navy. Paul brightened a bit, said he had, too, and after a few questions and answers, we tumbled to the fact that we both went to Radioman School in San Diego and were in the same class. So 33 years earlier, we had learned Morse in the same classroom (remember Shout Week, Paul?) and all the other hoo-hah.
As I KNOW I have mentioned here previously, Paul finished first in our class and was allowed to choose his first duty station from those available, and went to Hawaii. I finished, ahem, somewhat lower in the class, but also wound up going to an exotic island -- ICELAND.

Nice. I still have the t shirt I bought at Spruce Tree Music. Are they still in business? My hair is not as dark anymore.

Madison was great fun, jamming in the breakfast room until late into the night, strolling around in the extreme cold, and our visit to Spruce Tree Music. Hard to believe it's almost 17 years since we did this.
John brought a huge tray of beyond-bakery-quality cookies that Dar had made for us, and it held out for the entire weekend.
I don't remember much about meals except maybe for breakfast in that breakfast room (which had a lounge area complete with leather sofa, chairs, and a gas-fed fireplace)—where did we eat other meals? The reason I appear only in the group shot is because I was behind the camera, clicking the shutter button, for the rest of them. That might have been the last time I saw Mike Gilles. Everyone looks so much younger...

It was 17 years ago. Who remembers meals from 17 years ago? I couldn’t tell you what I ate last Friday. I assume we went to restaurants.
I still am in touch with Mike. He retired from flying for the Hiltons when Baron died but is still flying for some guy who owns restaurants around the country. Mike flies helicopters, gliders, hot air balloons, aerobatics in a Stearman biplane, and jets of various sizes. He is in the air quite a lot.

Nothing really stands out, except perhaps for the last meal the three of us shared when I was leaving Chicago, at that Polish restaurant somewhere on the road to the airport, maybe?
As far as Mike being in the air quite a lot, I suppose one could say that about many of us right here on the Soundhole.

He said he remembers some dumpster diving in back of a Burger King.
