Shock of the day! DaWife came downstairs to get the can of paste wax I keep in the shop, I keep several colors of paste wax. She saw the rearrangement and her jaw dropped. "The place looks huge, What did you do?" The two power tools I use the most are the belt/disk sander and the buffer. They are also the farthest apart because the sander is the second dirtiest and the buffer must be kept the cleanest. While the buffer is near my bench all the other power tool are arranged in order of how messy they are. The sander and then the router table being the farthest. Router tables throw waste material everywhere and my homemade one doesn't have a dust collector on it. Terry gave me his old dust collector when he got the new huge one for his shop but it was too big for the low amp circuits in my shop. That thing dimmed all the house lights when turned on and blew a breaker if I tried to run a tool at the same time so it went to good buddy Capt Donn's new workshop. I need to have a 100 amp service installed in my shop. While the place is still clean I'll take a few photos. I haven't put everything in its place yet but it's getting there. Center tool bench is not quite where it belongs because I may shift power tool positions

I'm off today. Last year at exactly this same time of year we had a crew of subs: Me, Alisha, Emily, Jamie, Evan, Evan, Jerry, Daniel, Brittanie, Roberto, and Cameron. That's a crew of eleven subs of varying skill levels sharing the burden of the impending holiday crush. And even with a crew that size, anything less than a fifty hour work week was rare.. . And by "rare" I mean it never happened. Right now we have me, Alisha, Emily, Jamie, Daniel, Adrian, and Kris (Kris, who is likely going to quit because he seems incapable of the simplest tasks). That's a crew of six (we lost two this week, and there are no new hires on the horizon). Almost exactly half the size. And the Amazon work load has never diminished since the holidays of last year. It means I am assured of employment for as long as I want it, but the tension is getting pretty thick on the hard days. Those who are more capable than I of doing the job are starting to be more frustrated with the co-workers who can't get the job done than they are at the nearly impossible workload that faces us. One of my coworkers (one I admire the most) posted this on facebook: If we worked for an individual or a private company -- especially one without a union -- my coworker would be getting paid more than me. But working for the post office, the only thing management can do to ameliorate the disgruntlement due to the disparity in skill levels is to widely and often point them out -- to acknowledge that she carries more weight because I can't carry enough. If the disparity were due to laziness on my part, they should discipline or fire me. But in a circumstance like the Warsaw post office, even the lazy can perform at least one or two tasks (like deliver parcels) that the good worker then won't have to. That's not perfect, but when the post office can't even BEG people to come and work for us, we're stuck with what we have. There was only one Michael Jordan on the Bulls. And as good and indispensable as he was (the Bulls would never have won a championship without him), he couldn't do it alone. There were always four dispensable players on the court with him -- each one either rebounding, passing, setting picks, or playing defense. Of course, Michael Jordan made WAY more money than the other four.... ... but I covered that in my first paragraph.

John unfortunately, even in private business your first paragraph is pretty much the norm. The Michael Jordan paragraph, not so much. As a manager I had outstanding employees and some not so good.
My ability to recognize their different levels with appropriate pay was severely constrained by job classification, pay ranges, personnel policies, etc. With almost yearly budget cuts ("We must all learn to do more with less!") the reward for the great worker was often that they were not the one laid off that year. Oh, and the privilege of taking up the slack. Eventually these best people hoped to be the next one let go.
I might be given, in a good year, a raise pool of 3.6-5% of salaries to divvy up. So everyone gets 3.6-5% or you slice a little off the worst performer to sweeten the raise of the best. But you can't give them what they deserve, even if they perform like MJ. And after reducing staff due to budget cuts, unless you are a stupid manager, you don't have any really bad people left.
As someone who was a self-employed craftsman these restraints may have not been obvious to you.

It's Friday. The Steel Wheels show last night was pretty good, second time I've seen them, I probably won't be ready to see them again for several years. I don't remember when you came to the Soundhole, but I mentioned back when that those guys (specifically Jay Lapp) are Goshen guys. I've sat in with Jay and a few others at jams in Goshen, and Jay's mandolin was made by Jim Shenk. Two years ago they were in Cedar Rapids and at that time their bass player was from Iowa, not too far from Cedar Rapids. I can't remember his name, but he has since left the group and gotten married. They all seem to be good musicians, a little more vocal variety (not one person doing all the vocals in a two hour show) would be nice.

I worked nights in the post office main distribution center for a year while going to school. 10:30pm - 5:30 am. Then I went to school 4 days a week. Then I switched to days,8-3. One of my co workers never interacted with others. A few years after I left, he murdered his two children and killed himself while the wife was out shopping.
