The trash cans by the curb look so fall-like with their coating of frost. Clear, blue skies, the sound of a hunter’s Gatling gun in the distance, and 18 million geese on the pond! Ah, fall in the Midwest! Enjoy.

Bike ride early, breakfast, with wife and dog to the vet (fever) to get a shot and some medicine, laundry, and more laundry. Wife made dinner, I did the cleanup, and this is one of the times our dishwasher acted up. I guess there's a screen on the water inlet that, due to old pipes or something, is clogged. In the past the dishwasher maker service people say there's nothing wrong with the unit, and we had a plumber once work on that point for a while, and it's generally been better. Tonight a 35min quick cycle went for and hour and forty minutes. At least the dishes are clean...!

The weather's turned generally colder here (only 60's for highs, definitely not midwest cold) and I'm continuing to work on my wife's kitchen remodel (taking the day tomorrow to go choose a quartz/quartzite/granite slab for counter tops and then working a full appliance swap since the wife managed to sleuth up some stashes of inventory) and getting the grass cut for the last time this season.
Old appliances are going to the son's girlfriend's mother. Lot's of folks still in and out of the house. Which is the way we like it.

Morning. Off to Costco in a bit. We need to buy candy for Halloween. Apparently our new neighborhood gets slammed with kids during “normal” times, and the expected pent up demand means we need a bunch of candy to give the little ghouls.

Mike In the 6 years we have been here, we have gotten a total of 5 trick or treaters. 3 were Lutheran girls who wished us Happy Reformation Day and two were boys who were obviously lost.

Good morning. It's Eggs Benedict for me in a moment, because I need the arteriosclerosis, see?
Cooling in Texas. And raining. My dog dislikes rain. First dog I ever had who didn't like rain.
Also, time to get out of my funk and start practicing guitar again.

My plan for today is to brave the wind this afternoon and get in a bike ride. I want to check out the newly paved trail to see if the area around Blue Creek has been completed.
While I bike, my crock pot will be busy cooking a batch of beef vegetable soup/stew. I'm using the last half of the stuffed rump roast from a couple days ago, boy it smells good!

Good morning.
The girls spent an evening carving pumpkins and after three nights they are still out on the steps in one piece. Come Halloween night there won't be an intact pumpkin for miles.
I gave the girls several choices of places for my Birthday dinner. Kaiah is working two jobs this week so we will wait until the weekend. She just got offered a job at the Science Museum in St Paul but did not want to quit her old part time job on short notice.
Down to the shop.

Morning.
An all day light rain with scattered intermittency. Perfect! Fall rains are spring's gain.
(I can almost feel my freshly planted daffodil bulbs waking up and beginning to send out a few exploratory roots... "What the hell! Where are we? This isn't Holland. Hmm... nice dirt, though. Ohh, is this peat moss? Yummy!"

Just ran across this from the Duluth newspaper:
Conservation Officer Kylan Hill responded to a trespass and possible poached-moose call on the Gunflint Trail. The homeowner claimed to have seen two hunters dragging a dead moose across the driveway. Further investigation showed that the homeowner was actually watching their driveway via security camera as they were sitting in their other house a few states away. The “hunters” were the neighbors and the “moose” was actually a large tent.

I'm off today. On the agenda is fixing the Jeep's fender (it popped off when the ball joint gave way), putting a new carburetor on the leaf blower, putting a hose adapter on the sink, and dumping 5 bottles of vanilla porter because, though the recipe that called for it was fantastic, the rest of the 6 pack is undrinkable.

Cold and rain. Shop work mostly.
I am watching Foundations on Apple TV. Never read the books. It’s pretty good. 20 years ago it probably would have been billed “fast moving and exciting”. With our 2021 attention spans it seems a bit slow.

I've managed to work out a thumbstyle arrangement of Winter Wonderland in C. Now I'm working on trying to actually play it. It's going pretty well on my Tele with the skinny neck. Other guitars are all problematical at this point. Mostly closed chords of course.
Don't think I'll ever be able to do Sleigh Ride, but Jingle Bell Rock might be a possibility. We may need some of these kinds of holiday pop tunes for a private party gig in December.

I'm going back to bed. I tried to fix the fender. Went to the dealership and bought the proper clips (even bought extra, guessing I might have trouble...and when I went to put them on, it's a good thing I did because the dealership said I needed five clips, I bought seven, but I needed ten. Fortunately, three of the remaining ones still on the fender were not broken).
When I went to put the fender back on, I realized I needed to take the wheel off to reach in and push two more fasteners to the inside. So, I set about taking the wheel off. The van's jack was easier to access, so I pulled it out of the back and tried the lug wrench for size. It wouldn't fit. It might have fit on the lugnut, but it wouldn't reach around it because the lugs are recessed in the decorative wheel. So I dug out the wrench made for the Jeep. Still no dice. It doesn't fit into the recess either.
I called the Jeep dealership to discover that someone had traded out the stock wheels for sportier looking "Sport Tuning" rims. Whoever did that, then drove around for several years with no means of changing the tire, should they have had a flat. Apparently it takes a special wrench. There are five chrome things in the place where the lugnuts are. Three of them appear to have hex heads. The other two appear to be chrome "buttons". No hex head.
Meanwhile, while I had the jack and wrench out, I figured I might as well put the wheel back on the van. A few weeks ago Dar had a flat, called AAA and had them change it out. We got the good tire fixed but I haven't had time to switch it back. Well, I tried, but the air wrench the AAA guy used to put the spare on tightened the lugs too much for me to loosen them.
Two jobs down and failed. Do I dare try to put the carburetor on the leaf blower?
