Travelzoo sends out email for travel destination deals...stuff like Peru, Punta Cana, Portugal, etc. I get one yesterday touting...
PLANO TEXAS!!
It's a nice burb of Dallas. That's all.
So, the end really is near, isn't it?

I'm hearing here and elsewhere that the COVID vaccines aren't really working that well prompting renewed draconian lock downs in other parts of the world.
Maybe much of the country is headed for lock downs again and Texas and Florida will soon be the only destinations available in the world.
Wouldn't put it past anyone in DC right now.

So, the end really is near, isn't it? Plano has been consistently ranked one of the "best places to stay home" in America, a nice way of saying it's one of the most boring cities in America, along with Lubbock, TX, Chesapeake, VA, Fort Wayne, IN, and DesMoines, IA. The only excitement here is the paparazzi outside my house waiting to photograph me on my way to Shipley Do-Nuts. I used to moon them, but that only encouraged them.

Boring has often been included in lists of places with unusual names.[4] In 2012, Boring was named a sister city of the village of Dull, Scotland, and later Bland, Australia.

Thirty miles east of Climax is another little town, Fertile, Minn., which was the basis for this legendary car accident headline years ago:
FERTILE WOMAN DIES NEAR CLIMAX

And there's this place in Arizona. The question aptly captures its character. I've heard it acquired that name in an interesting way. It sit at the junction of highways that run from Tucson and from Gila Bend to the area where Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is located. The highways converge in a Y shape. When the town got a post office it gave the postal service "Y" as its name. The name was rejected on the basis that names of cities and towns had to consist of at least three letters. So the residents opted for Why.

The world's largest piano is not in Texas, but it's in either Poland or New Zealand, depending on who you ask.

Toad Hop, IN, which is in Vigo County, just west of Terre Haute, has a reputation of being a rather jumpy place. Population in 2010 was 108, but since then a couple of folks have croaked. It’s an interesting place, warts and all.

I'm sure that Plano is a nice place, as I'm sure are lots of places in the Dallas area. With lots of nice people, too. But approaching the city from the north several years ago and facing what looked like a big pile of concrete spaghetti dumped in the middle of our route turned me away from ever wanting to drive through it again.

We have been there. We always have been curious about the name. Such a shame that you don't have a computer, which could explain that question in a minute or less.

I did not say we had never investigated it. I just said we were curious about it. Especially since there are differing theories as to how the name came about. It seems that even What Cheerians are not sure how it got the name. Now, Rat Hole, MN is easy to understand. What Cheer less so.
